One such player has now found a new home after bringing his spell at Rangers to an end.
Bolton Wanderers have officially secured the services of Ben Davies on a two-year agreement following his departure from the Scottish giants.
The experienced centre-back arrives with a wealth of knowledge gathered from a career that has taken him through English football’s pyramid and beyond.
Davies first made his name at Preston North End, where he became a regular figure and accumulated 145 appearances before attracting interest from higher-profile clubs.
That eventually earned him a move to Liverpool, although opportunities at Anfield proved difficult to come by and he never managed to feature competitively for the Merseyside outfit.
His next major step came in 2022 when Rangers brought him to Ibrox, where he went on to make 58 appearances across all competitions while competing for domestic honours and European football.
Despite showing flashes of quality in Scotland, Davies spent much of the last two seasons away from Rangers on temporary deals in search of more consistent minutes.
One of those spells proved particularly successful.
The defender played a significant role in Birmingham City’s outstanding 2024/25 campaign, making 35 appearances as the club stormed to the League One title during a record-breaking season.
Last term, he also spent time at Oxford United, adding another 11 appearances to his tally before returning to Rangers at the end of the campaign.
Now, with a permanent move completed, Davies is looking forward to a fresh challenge with Bolton.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, the defender admitted there was only one destination on his mind once he became aware of Wanderers’ interest.
“It feels brilliant to be here. I heard of interest from a few clubs but as soon as I knew Bolton were interested, this was the club I wanted to come to.
“It’s going to be exciting times back in the Championship after an excellent year last season. I’ve seen that the average attendance last year was over 20,000 and that was a massive pull for me.”
For Bolton, this signing is about far more than simply adding another name to the squad.
Davies brings experience from different environments, including the pressures of playing for clubs such as Liverpool and Rangers, while also understanding the demands of Championship football from his earlier years.
His arrival should provide valuable competition and depth at the back as Wanderers continue building towards their ambitions for the new season.
Supporters will be hoping that the former Rangers defender can become an important figure both on and off the pitch, helping guide the club through what promises to be another demanding Championship campaign.
After years of moving between clubs and temporary spells, Davies now has the opportunity to establish himself once again and become a key part of Bolton’s long-term plans.
