Marco Silva delivered a brutally honest assessment after Fulham were held to a 1-1 draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park — comments that have left sections of the home support stunned by just how blunt the Portuguese coach was in his verdict.
The Fulham boss saw his side’s three-match winning run come to an end in South London, but Silva made it clear he felt his team were the better side on the night and deserved more than a share of the spoils.
Crystal Palace took the lead through Jean-Philippe Mateta, briefly swinging momentum in their favour, but Fulham responded with control, composure and sustained pressure. Tom Cairney’s equaliser underlined that dominance and reinforced Silva’s belief that his players had done enough to win the game outright.
Speaking after the final whistle, Silva said:
“I agree that we probably deserved more from the game. Tight game, as we expected, both teams respecting each other.”
Silva explained that Fulham had been the side dictating the tempo before Palace struck, stressing that his team were the ones pushing for victory rather than simply reacting to the opposition.
“We were more in control of the game before they scored, I think we were more the team on the front foot to try to win the game. We created some dangerous moments, not clearcut chances for both sides, but dangerous moments.”
The Fulham manager felt the difference ultimately came down to a lack of ruthlessness in the final third, rather than any shortcomings in their overall approach.
“I think we arrived in dangerous areas very well – the last moment, last run, the last finish probably we were lacking a bit more aggressiveness inside the box.”
Silva acknowledged that Palace grew in confidence after taking the lead, making life more uncomfortable for his side before the interval, but praised Fulham’s response after half-time.
“After the goal, okay, Palace instilled their confidence a little bit, they arrived in dangerous areas more and was a little bit difficult for us to react until half-time. Half-time we adjusted things, we changed our pressure, we gave some steps in terms of the high press, and the reaction was very good.”
The introduction of substitutes proved pivotal, with Silva highlighting the impact made by players coming off the bench — particularly Cairney, whose strike rescued a point.
“I’m pleased for the players. Even before the goal, we created great moments to score – great header from Raul Jimenez, we were very unlucky again with that off the post. Great goal, what a goal from Tom. The players that came in, first Timothy Castagne and after Tom Cairney, they had an impact.”
Silva also singled out Saša Lukić for his tactical discipline and intelligence after a positional tweak, which helped Fulham break Palace’s compact defensive shape.
“Even when we changed the position of Sasa Lukic, I think he did very, very well as a six, a little bit more freedom the way he was receiving the ball in high lines, with them very narrow.”
As the game opened up late on, Silva believed Fulham showed greater ambition and control, even on the road — a point that will likely frustrate Palace supporters who felt their side were hanging on.
“I think the goal is a good example where Saša received the ball, how we break the lines and, of course, top finish from Tom Cairney. Great goal from us, really deserved.”
He concluded by reiterating that Fulham were the team pushing hardest for all three points in the closing stages.
“I’m very pleased with the ambition again of the team in the end of the game, playing away from home, we are the team pushing more to win the game and controlling the game in our offensive half again… overall, probably deserved more from the game again against Palace, because we were the team that created more throughout the game.”
