Crystal Palace’s hopes of lifting the League Cup were brought to a halt on Tuesday night as Oliver Glasner’s side exited the competition following a penalty shootout defeat to Premier League leaders Arsenal. Palace defender Chris Richards was withdrawn during the second half, and an update has now surfaced regarding his unusual off-the-ball injury.
Maxence Lacroix, despite his strong form this season, endured a night to forget. The French centre-back got the final touch in a crowded penalty area, allowing the north London outfit to take the lead with just ten minutes remaining in normal time.
After sustained pressure, the FA Cup holders then levelled the score with seconds left on the clock. Captain Marc Guehi reacted fastest after an Adam Wharton delivery dropped kindly in his path, and Kepa Arrizabalaga could not keep out the effort. Lacroix, though, missed the decisive penalty as Arsenal ultimately emerged victorious.
Chris Richards Injury: Update Emerges After Off-The-Ball Incident
The American defender, who is expected to feature under Mauricio Pochettino at the 2026 World Cup, was replaced by Will Hughes in the 75th minute – five minutes after initially going down – and further details on the strange off-the-ball moment have now come to light.
As shown in the footage below, Richards attempted to attack Martin Odegaard’s cross before pulling up injured. Speaking on ITV commentary during the all-London encounter, Sam Matterface said: “He landed awkwardly more than anything else.”
Arsenal’s Norwegian captain looked to whip a ball into the area, with Gabriel Jesus aiming to meet it. The Brazilian almost did, but Richards’ challenge was enough to disrupt him, causing the chance to go begging. However, the Palace defender immediately grimaced in discomfort and soon collapsed onto the Emirates pitch, prompting his teammates to alert the referee.
Shortly afterwards, Palace’s medical staff were summoned and worked to stem significant bleeding from his foot. As the replay aired, Lee Dixon commented: “I’m unsure,” to which Matterface replied: “Someone landed on his toe? That could be a possibility.”
Richards – who has featured in all but seven minutes of Palace’s 2025/26 Premier League season – had his right boot removed before being stretchered off by club staff. He was later seen watching the penalty shootout from the dugout while using crutches.
Following Palace’s League Cup exit, Glasner revealed that Richards required stitches. “He had a knock on his foot, and it had to be stitched. It doesn’t look so bad. I don’t know if it’s possible for him on Sunday, but hopefully, in the New Year, he’s back because, of course, we’d struggle a little bit (without him).
“He’s one of our best headers and, to take him off, Will Hughes comes in as we didn’t have a tall defender on the bench,” he added while looking ahead to the upcoming fixtures, with Tottenham Hotspur visiting Selhurst Park on December 28 before Fulham arrive shortly after.
How Pivotal is Richards to Glasner’s Palace:
At present, the length of Richards’ absence – after joining from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022 – remains unclear. However, any spell without the Alabama-born centre-back would pose a problem for Glasner and his coaching staff, given how impressive he has been alongside Guehi and Lacroix since the opening game in August.
The Selhurst Park crowd has grown familiar with Glasner favouring a three-man defence. Consequently, Richards has logged heavy minutes since the season began, totalling 2,122 across all competitions, and will need adequate recovery time before returning.
A dynamic defender with strong aerial prowess – as highlighted by Glasner – his absence would be keenly felt as the Eagles aim to start 2026 with a victory over fellow London side Fulham. Palace supporters will be hoping the issue proves minor and that Richards is back on the pitch sooner rather than later.
