Martí Cifuentes has pushed back at furious Leicester City supporters after a section of the home crowd joined Sheffield United fans in chanting “you’re getting sacked in the morning” during the Foxes’ painful 3-2 defeat — a defiant response that left many City fans stunned and even angrier.
The Spaniard found himself mocked by the away end just before the break as City collapsed into a 3-0 hole. What shocked most supporters, though, was that some Leicester fans also joined in, openly voicing their belief that his time is up.
Despite the humiliation, Leicester clawed back two goals in the second half and nearly snatched an unlikely draw — a spirited response, but not nearly enough to quiet the growing unrest. The boos that greeted full-time told the real story: fans believe he has lost the plot, lost the dressing room, and is close to losing his job.
But in a move that stunned many, Cifuentes insisted he is still the man to “fix” the club, asking fans to trust him despite the mounting evidence pointing the other way. His tone — confident, almost stubborn — only deepened anger among supporters who feel he’s clinging to a job already slipping through his fingers.
“We need to give much more to the fans than what we are doing so far,” Cifuentes said. “I knew about the situation when I came to the club and I knew we had a fanbase where many feel disappointed about what’s happened over the last seasons.
“I’m aware of that. I can’t hide from that. Despite not being here, I know that’s the feeling. We need to instil this togetherness and I never said it would be easy.
“But I have achieved that in the other clubs I’ve been. It’s not the first time I’ve had this song before. Fortunately for me, I’ve always got the confidence to turn things around because that’s what I’ve done in different clubs in different countries.”
To many Foxes fans, these comments came off as delusional — pointing to past achievements that feel irrelevant to the current crisis. His belief that he can “turn things around” was met with disbelief from supporters who now see this as the end of the road.
He continued to insist that he is repairing deeper issues at the club:
“I hope together with the club we are aware of things we need to improve. I understand the frustration and it was completely fair, the reaction at half-time. The first half was absolutely below the level.
“I’m very committed to giving the fans something back. I just hope they understand that I came here to fix something and that they let me fix this.”
Cifuentes also stressed he still has the support of chairman Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha and director of football Jon Rudkin, claiming their belief in him remains intact.
“I have a good relationship with the chairman and director of football,” he added. “We have constant meetings about how we can improve things… I feel full confidence on that task I was signed for.”
He went on to defend the club’s summer approach, highlighting limited spending and a “rebuilding process,” urging everyone to “stick together.”
But for many Leicester fans, the damage is done. The chants, the boos, and the mood around the King Power all point to one thing: most supporters believe he has already managed his final match.
