At the time, questions surrounded whether Hatate would be able to make the step up, given his unusual route into professional football and suggestions that he was more of a utility player than a specialist midfielder.
Those doubts disappeared almost immediately.
Hatate announced himself in spectacular fashion at Tynecastle, firing home a stunning long-range strike before following it up with a memorable man-of-the-match display against Celtic’s fiercest rivals at Parkhead.
That performance proved to be one of the defining moments of Postecoglou’s early tenure and helped establish Hatate as a key figure in Celtic’s resurgence.
From that point onwards, the midfielder continued to enhance his reputation, attracting admiration from outside Scotland and regularly finding himself linked with lucrative moves to the English Premier League and other top European leagues.
Unfortunately, the momentum did not continue forever.
His performances gradually became more inconsistent, and many observers believe that decline coincided with Postecoglou’s departure to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023.
The managerial exit appeared to impact Hatate more than most, although he still produced flashes of the quality that made him such a fan favourite during Brendan Rodgers’ time in charge.
Now, however, the situation appears to have reached a turning point.
According to Stephen McGowan of The Herald, Hatate has asked to leave Parkhead this summer following confirmation that Martin O’Neill has agreed a one-year contract as Celtic manager, with an option for a further year.
That development may have further weakened his desire to remain at the club despite still having two years left on his current contract, which runs until 2028.
Attention will now shift towards finding a solution that benefits all parties involved while ensuring Celtic secure the strongest possible fee for one of their most talented midfielders.
There is little doubt that, at his best, Hatate possessed the ability to dominate matches and unlock defences with moments of genuine creativity.
However, football moves quickly, and Celtic have learned in the past that maintaining a dressing room fully committed to the cause is essential for long-term success.
Should an exit materialise, Hatate will depart having delivered some outstanding moments in a Celtic shirt. While his journey at Parkhead may not have ended exactly as many envisioned, few would dispute the impact he made during the peak of his time in Glasgow.
For both player and club, the feeling now is that a fresh chapter may be approaching.
