Last night was dreadful as far as Leicester supporters are concerned. They were defeated by Hull City despite dominating possession (64%) and attempting twice as many shots (18) as Hull (9).
For Leicester, it was more a story of hitting and praying. They found themselves in some promising areas, but honestly, there wasn’t a single player on the pitch you’d trust to slot the ball past Hull’s keeper.
And, as cliché and ‘obvious’ as this may sound, that’s essentially the whole point of football. Possession means nothing if you can’t find the back of the net – in fact, it only makes the control of the ball even more frustrating.
So yes, here comes another ‘obvious truth.’
Leicester urgently requires a proper striker in January:
Leicester needs a number nine they can count on. It’s been said before, but after last night, it became a pressing necessity.
There isn’t a single player in the squad who looks capable of being among the Championship’s top scorers. That might sound harsh, but it’s the reality.
Sure, Leicester has managed to score goals from different positions, but we’ve seen that story unfold far too often. When the pressure is on, the Foxes need a striker who can create a goal out of nothing.
Gone are the glory days of Jamie Vardy, sadly. Now, Leicester must look toward finding a new talisman.
It’s painfully clear to everyone: Leicester must bring in a centre forward in January. If they can only sign one player in one role, let it be a proper striker.
Granted, there are other weaknesses in Cifuentes’ squad. It will take more than just a goal scorer to fix everything, but realistically, a reliable striker who can score consistently would transform this team instantly.
If they could simply convert their chances, the level of frustration wouldn’t be anywhere near as high as it is now.
At this stage, it’s still early days for Martí Cifuentes at Leicester. He can’t be fairly judged yet, even though tension seems to be building among the fanbase. Truthfully, we haven’t seen him manage a squad strong enough to dominate the Championship so far.
For now, Leicester’s most realistic aim should be a playoff spot. That was always the more probable target for the Foxes — and it remains achievable.
