NafisaLeeds United striker Joe Gelhardt has emerged as a key transfer target for Hull City, with the Championship side reportedly in discussions to secure his services on loan until the end of the season. According to Hull Live, the Tigers view Gelhardt as a vital addition to bolster their attack under manager Ruben Selles.
City have long been searching for reinforcements up front and believe Gelhardt could provide the cutting edge they need. Leeds, however, are holding off on a final decision until they have clarity on Patrick Bamford’s hamstring injury, which has left the Whites weighing their options. A verdict on Gelhardt’s immediate future is expected by the end of the week.
The 22-year-old forward, who hails from Liverpool, has found regular game time hard to come by at Elland Road this season under Daniel Farke. Gelhardt has managed just nine minutes of Championship football, featuring briefly against Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City, and played just over an hour in the EFL Cup earlier in the campaign.
Hull City’s need for attacking reinforcements is pressing. Before a recent 3-0 victory over Leeds, the Tigers had netted only 22 goals in their first 25 games, making them the league’s lowest scorers. This underwhelming return has prompted a focused effort to add firepower during the January transfer window.
Despite his limited appearances this season, Gelhardt boasts a proven track record, including Premier League goals during his time at Leeds. The Tigers are optimistic that a move to the MKM Stadium could reignite his form and help lift the club from the Championship’s lower reaches.
Gelhardt initially joined Leeds from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2020 after progressing through the Latics’ academy. His first goal for the Whites came in a 2-2 draw against Hull City in September of that year. The forward, who can also operate on the right wing, signed a contract extension in 2022, tying him to Leeds until 2027.
On the international stage, Gelhardt has represented England from Under-16 to Under-20 levels and spent time on loan at Sunderland last season. Should the loan move to Hull materialise, he would be available to feature in the Tigers’ FA Cup clash with Doncaster Rovers on Sunday. His arrival would provide competition for forwards Mason Burstow and Joao Pedro, particularly amid uncertainty surrounding Chris Bedia’s future.
