NafisaKevin Thomson has hit out at Chris Sutton for what he described as “classless” remarks aimed at James Tavernier.
Sutton made the comments following Rangers’ defeat to Hearts, pointing the finger at the captain for both goals conceded.
The pundit claimed Tavernier has a “heart the size of a pea.”
He said on Sky Sports: “The Hearts goals sum up the Rangers captain’s time at the club.
“He is bad on both goals. He should react first, smell the danger, and block it; he doesn’t.”
However, it later emerged that Andreas Skov Olsen was at fault for one of the goals.
Thomson, a former Rangers midfielder, took issue with Sutton’s assessment of Tavernier.
Speaking on The Breakdown, he said: “I think that’s just a lack of class from Chris Sutton.
“You’re talking about somebody who’s been at Rangers for 550 games, scored nearly 150 goals for Rangers, and played there for 11 years.”
“You can question his defending.
“He doesn’t stop the cross.
“The first three long balls down the left-hand channel, Kingsley goes and competes with him, he doesn’t go and win them.
“I think it’s easy to judge him as a player and what qualities he’s got – i.e. he might not be the best defender.”
Thomson is not the only figure to push back against Sutton’s comments.
Former Rangers players Andy Halliday and Ross McCormack have also come out in support of Tavernier.
