Leicester City are close to announcing Marti Cifuentes as their new manager, according to reports.
The Foxes have conducted a thorough hiring process that included meetings with Gary O’Neil and Chris Wilder.
The team also evaluated Sheffield Wednesday coach Danny Rohl and former Middlesbrough leader Michael Carrick for the role.
Cifuentes, who formally left QPR last month after being placed on gardening leave in April, is anticipated to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy at the King Power Stadium.
Leicester are likely to offer compensation to secure the Spaniard’s services.
There’s also a chance that QPR assistant Xavi Calm, who collaborated with Cifuentes at Loftus Road, will join him as part of the new coaching staff.
The 43-year-old took over QPR in October 2023, stepping in when the club was positioned second from bottom in the Championship.
He managed to lead them to safety, finishing 18th by the season’s end.
Leicester separated from Van Nistelrooy in June after a dismal run that saw the former striker win only five out of 27 matches.
His brief stint concluded with relegation from the Premier League. By making the managerial switch before the new financial year, the club can include the severance package in next year’s accounts—a strategy that aids their ongoing efforts to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Cifuentes will become Leicester’s sixth managerial appointment in just over two years, as the club prepares for a tough season in the Championship.
They may also face a points deduction after being accused of a PSR breach.
