The potential appointment of Robbie Keane as Celtic manager would send alarm bells ringing at Rangers ahead of the new campaign.

That is according to his former Republic of Ireland teammate Shane Long, who believes the ex-striker is the right man to drive the club towards “greater things.”

Keane — who had a six-month loan spell in Glasgow from Tottenham in 2010 — was previously mentioned as a candidate for the Parkhead role before Wilfried Nancy’s unsuccessful spell in charge.

His eight-game stint saw Martin O’Neill called in for a second rescue mission this season to stabilise the team, although the 74-year-old is expected to step down from the dugout this summer.

After winning the Premiership and Scottish Cup last term, the experienced boss is set for crucial discussions with Dermot Desmond regarding his future.

However, Long has thrown his support behind his former teammate Keane to take over after he brought his time at Ferencvaros to an end last week — even drawing a bold comparison with multiple Champions League-winning manager Pep Guardiola.

Speaking to BOYLE Sports, who provide the latest World Cup odds, he said: “Would Robbie Keane going in at Celtic be a worrying time for Rangers? Definitely.

“The only thing missing, because they have the players and the squad, was just that belief in the dressing room and in the style of play, alongside trust in the manager.

“Robbie will bring that because I know him personally. I think his passion for the game will also transfer to the players and they’ll see how much it matters.

“I’m not comparing him to Pep, but you can see that in Pep as well, the way he just lives and breathes football. Robbie’s the same sort of character and individual.

“Having those links with the club and that Celtic connection in his background will come through in the dressing room.

“As I said, the players are there. They’ll do well to keep hold of one or two of them as they’ve had excellent seasons and it might be their time to move on.

“But Celtic have done well bringing in new signings, especially the Japanese players coming in and standing out. It could be a refreshed Celtic next year.

“I would like to see Robbie in there at the helm and taking them to greater things.”
