Celtic’s humiliating defeat to Falkirk has brought Martin O’Neill’s position under renewed scrutiny, with supporters growing increasingly frustrated by the team’s performances and the direction of the club.

The 2-0 loss at Falkirk was another painful evening for the Hoops, who missed the opportunity to strengthen their position at the top of the Scottish Premiership. It also came after a difficult run of results that has left O’Neill facing uncomfortable questions from supporters.

With Celtic preparing for Thursday’s Europa League meeting with Beşiktaş, attention has inevitably turned towards whether the club’s hierarchy could take drastic action against their manager.

However, despite the growing backlash, the available reports do not indicate that Celtic are preparing to sack O’Neill before the Turkish side’s visit.

Instead, the situation suggests that the club are still prepared to give the experienced manager time to turn things around, even as pressure continues to build around him.

Celtic board’s position on Martin O’Neill emerges

O’Neill’s future has been a major talking point since Celtic endured a damaging sequence of defeats earlier in the campaign.

The manager admitted he would reflect on his position after three consecutive losses, including defeats against Rangers and Ferencváros. That prompted speculation that his return to Parkhead could end much sooner than expected.

However, O’Neill subsequently confirmed that he had decided to remain in charge.

Sky Sports reported at the time that Celtic’s hierarchy had remained calm throughout the uncertainty and had no appetite to dismiss him. Chief executive Michael Nicholson also publicly backed the manager, saying the club would come together to support O’Neill and the players.

More recently, Football Insider reported that Celtic were not actively considering replacements and were instead looking towards the end of the season when assessing the managerial situation.

That does not mean O’Neill is immune from criticism or that his position is guaranteed indefinitely. But there is currently no confirmed indication that the board has decided to remove him immediately.

Falkirk defeat increases pressure before Beşiktaş test

The latest setback has only made the situation more uncomfortable.

Celtic suffered a 2-0 defeat against Falkirk, conceding twice in the first half after Ethan Ross opened the scoring in the third minute and Scott Tanser doubled the advantage before the interval.

Despite creating opportunities, O’Neill’s players could not find a way past former Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain, who produced an outstanding performance.

The result also intensified frustration among supporters, with criticism directed towards both the manager and the club’s hierarchy.

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton was among those to speak out, questioning the team’s organisation and arguing that responsibility for the problems ultimately rests with O’Neill.

The manager is therefore heading into Thursday’s European fixture under considerable pressure, with another disappointing performance likely to increase the noise surrounding his future.

Beşiktaş clash could become a crucial moment

Celtic’s meeting with Beşiktaş is now an important opportunity for O’Neill to deliver a response.

The Hoops have struggled in Europe this season, and their domestic difficulties have added to the pressure on the manager.

Supporters will want to see a much more convincing performance, particularly after the disappointment at Falkirk. A positive result would offer O’Neill some breathing space, while another poor display would inevitably intensify questions about his leadership.

However, there is no confirmed evidence that Thursday’s match has been designated as an immediate make-or-break fixture by the board.

O’Neill will know that results must improve, but the reports currently available point towards the club continuing with him rather than preparing an immediate dismissal.

Celtic supporters remain frustrated with the club

One of the biggest complications for Celtic is that the anger surrounding the club extends beyond the manager.

Sections of the support have directed criticism towards the board, with questions about recruitment, decision-making and the overall direction of the club becoming increasingly prominent.

That means simply changing the manager may not address every concern being raised by supporters.

Nevertheless, O’Neill remains the person responsible for the team’s performances on the pitch, and the defeat to Falkirk has made it harder for him to escape scrutiny.

For now, the indications are that Celtic are not preparing to sack their manager before the Beşiktaş encounter.

But with pressure mounting and supporters demanding a response, O’Neill needs his players to deliver something far more convincing on Thursday. Another disappointing result would leave the club facing even more difficult questions about what happens next.
