Kieran Tierney received a rousing Arsenal send-off as he stepped onto the Emirates pitch for the final time.

The defender is set to return to Celtic this summer after signing a pre-contract and has now featured in front of the Gunners’ home crowd for the last time.

Mikel Arteta introduced the Scotland full-back in the closing stages, and the supporters expressed their gratitude with loud cheers as he replaced Leandro Trossard for the final moments.

Fans also sang Tierney’s name in an emotional tribute to the defender.

The Gunners edged Newcastle 1-0 to virtually confirm second place in the English Premier League and with it, secure a Champions League place for next season.

Arsenal will wrap up their league season with an away trip to basement side Southampton next weekend.

Speaking after the match about bringing Tierney on, Arteta said: “With Kieran, he had a very special circumstance the way he had to come back and settle in the team again after four months out, and he’s been really good with the group.

“He has contributed in every possible way to help us and I’m very grateful for that..”

On Jorginho and KT, he added: “We had a few in the dressing room that is probably is going to be the last time that they put that shirt on at Emirates Stadium.

“I’ve been there and make sure that we are close to them, and I’m very grateful to them as well.”

Earlier this week, Brendan Rodgers mentioned he had been in contact with Tierney and disclosed the player was ‘champing at the bit’ to return to Parkhead and get started.

He said: “I haven’t spoken to him a lot of late. We’ve exchanged messages and stuff, but I know his love of the club and excitement to come back here. So, yes, I’m sure he’s champing at the bit to get back.”
