Rangers have booked their place in the Premier Sports Cup final after Ryan Naderi produced a decisive late moment to break Aberdeen’s resistance and secure a dramatic 1-0 victory at Hampden Park.

It was not the straightforward afternoon many supporters might have expected. Derek McInnes’ side arrived as favourites, having gone 10 matches unbeaten, but Aberdeen proved stubborn opponents and made Rangers work desperately hard for their place in the final.

For long periods, Stephen Robinson’s team frustrated the Ibrox side, defending resolutely and limiting their attacking opportunities. Rangers managed only one shot on target in a disappointing first half, with the Dons looking capable of taking the semi-final into a much more uncomfortable situation for their opponents.

But as the match progressed, the pressure continued to build. Rangers increased their intensity after the interval, pushed Aberdeen deeper into their own half and eventually found the breakthrough seven minutes before the end.

It was Naderi who delivered the moment that mattered, sending the Rangers supporters into celebration and ending Aberdeen’s hopes of reaching the final.

Ryan Naderi Breaks Aberdeen Hearts With 83rd-Minute Winner

Rangers had struggled to find a way through Aberdeen’s defensive organisation, with goalkeeper Marius Muller producing several important interventions to keep his side in the contest.

The Dons had also threatened occasionally, with Nesta Guinness-Walker forcing Ivor Pandur into a save during the first half, while Kevin Nisbet had opportunities to trouble the Rangers defence.

However, the balance of the contest shifted after the break as Rangers began creating more dangerous situations around the Aberdeen penalty area.

Kevin Kelsy came close when he headed a pinpoint delivery from Badredine Bouanani wide from close range, while Muller also denied further attempts from Bouanani and Nico Raskin.

The Aberdeen goalkeeper was being kept increasingly busy, but the pressure eventually became too much.

With seven minutes remaining, Bouanani played the ball back to James Penrice, who fired towards goal. Naderi reacted brilliantly, stepping into the path of the effort and redirecting it past Muller with a composed side-footed finish from close range.

It was the breakthrough Rangers desperately needed, and there was no time for Aberdeen to produce a meaningful response.

The goal was Naderi’s eighth of the season, making his contribution even more significant as Rangers secured their passage into the final.

Rangers Show Patience After Difficult First Half

Although the result will delight Rangers supporters, the performance was far from comfortable.

Aberdeen entered the semi-final with several defensive absentees, including Lewis Mayo, Mats Knoester, Dan Happe, Kristers Tobers and Chris Cadden, who were unavailable through injury or suspension.

Despite those problems, Robinson’s side defended with determination and made life difficult for the Rangers attackers.

McInnes also made some notable selection decisions, including dropping midfielder Dan Neil, moving Penrice into midfield and handing Bouanani a starting opportunity in place of Djeidi Gassama.

Aberdeen suffered another setback when Emmanuel Gyamfi picked up an injury while attempting to tackle Kim Min-su. Former Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong replaced him, with Brad Lyons moving across to right-back.

Rangers struggled to take advantage of the disruption during the opening period, with the game lacking the attacking quality expected from the favourites.

But the second half was a different story. The Ibrox side gradually increased the pressure, forcing Aberdeen into deeper defensive positions and creating a succession of opportunities before Naderi finally found the breakthrough.

Rangers Set Up December Cup Final

The victory means Rangers will now return to Hampden Park on December 13 for the Premier Sports Cup final.

They will face either Hearts or Hibernian, with the Edinburgh rivals scheduled to meet in the other semi-final on Sunday.

For McInnes, who previously won the competition with Aberdeen in 2014, reaching another final represents an important achievement as he looks to deliver silverware at Rangers.

The manner of the victory may not have been spectacular, but cup semi-finals are ultimately about finding a way through, and Rangers did exactly that.

Aberdeen deserve credit for making the contest difficult, particularly after arriving with a depleted defence. However, they were unable to withstand the sustained pressure in the closing stages.

Naderi’s intervention proved decisive, and his eighth goal of the campaign has sent Rangers one step away from lifting the trophy.

The final is now firmly in sight, with Rangers waiting to discover whether Hearts or Hibernian will stand between them and Premier Sports Cup glory.
