Leeds United have been handed a frustrating explanation after the Premier League officially clarified the controversial VAR decision that denied Dominic Calvert-Lewin a goal against Bournemouth.
Daniel Farke’s side thought they had made the perfect start to their Premier League clash at the Vitality Stadium when Calvert-Lewin found the net in the 19th minute.
The Leeds striker finished an attacking move and appeared to have given the visitors a valuable early advantage against one of the division’s in-form teams.
However, the celebrations were short-lived. VAR intervened, reviewed the incident and recommended that the referee overturn the original decision because of an alleged handball in the build-up.
It was a particularly painful moment for Leeds, who were subsequently left chasing the game after Bournemouth took the lead before half-time.
With supporters questioning the decision, the Premier League has now issued an official explanation, revealing precisely what happened during the incident.
Premier League confirm why Calvert-Lewin’s goal was disallowed
The Premier League confirmed on X that VAR had checked the referee’s original decision to award Leeds the goal before identifying an infringement involving Calvert-Lewin.
Its statement read: “VAR checked the referee’s call of goal to Leeds United – and determined that Calvert-Lewin handled the ball immediately before scoring and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”
The explanation from the VAR team provided an even clearer account of the incident.
“The ball accidentally comes off Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s left arm before going directly into the goal”.
That detail was central to the decision.
The Premier League acknowledged that the contact was accidental, but the fact that the ball came off the striker’s arm immediately before entering the net meant the goal could not stand.
The referee subsequently confirmed the final decision after the review, stating:
“After review, the ball strikes the arm of Leeds No.9 – the final decision is a free-kick.”

There was therefore no suggestion that Calvert-Lewin had deliberately handled the ball. Instead, the decision was based on the specific circumstances of the contact immediately before he scored.
Leeds left furious after crucial early breakthrough is taken away
The timing of the decision made it an especially frustrating setback for Farke and his players.
Leeds had an opportunity to take control of the contest after Calvert-Lewin appeared to produce the breakthrough they needed.
Scoring in the 19th minute would have changed the complexion of the match, potentially forcing Bournemouth to chase the game and giving the visitors something to build on.
Instead, the intervention wiped out the goal and left Leeds without the reward they thought they had earned.
The situation became even more difficult when Bournemouth went on to establish a 1-0 lead before the half-time whistle.
For Calvert-Lewin, it was undoubtedly a disappointing moment. The striker had done what he believed was necessary to put his team ahead, only for the celebrations to be cancelled following the VAR review.
The Premier League’s explanation has now made the reasoning behind the decision clear, but it will offer little comfort to a Leeds side that could have entered the game with a completely different advantage.
Farke faces second-half challenge after VAR controversy
With Bournemouth leading at the break, Farke’s immediate priority was finding a response from his players.
The disallowed goal had denied Leeds an early breakthrough, but the visitors still had an opportunity to change the outcome in the second half.
For the travelling supporters, however, the incident was likely to remain one of the defining talking points of the afternoon.
The Premier League has confirmed that the ball accidentally struck Calvert-Lewin’s left arm before going directly into the goal, explaining why VAR recommended that the effort be ruled out.
It was a costly moment for Leeds, who were left with a deficit to overcome after believing they had taken the lead against Bournemouth.
