Celtic supporters were celebrating a sensational afternoon at Parkhead after their side demolished Hearts 7-1, but the mood took an unexpected turn when Martin O’Neill revealed worrying news about one of the club’s brightest young talents.

The Hoops produced a ruthless attacking performance to silence their critics and restore confidence following a difficult run of results. Seven goals against last season’s title rivals represented a powerful response, with several players delivering performances that could prove important in the weeks ahead.

Few enjoyed a more memorable afternoon than Callum Osmand. Handed his first Celtic start, the youngster seized his opportunity by scoring twice in the opening half, giving supporters another reason to believe that the club could have an exciting talent emerging from within its ranks.

But just as Osmand appeared to be enjoying the perfect afternoon, his absence from the pitch after half-time raised immediate concerns.

Jota replaced the young forward at the interval, bringing an abrupt end to his pursuit of a possible hat-trick. With Celtic already leading 5-1, supporters might initially have assumed the substitution was simply about managing minutes in a match that was effectively decided.

However, O’Neill subsequently confirmed that Osmand had been experiencing discomfort in his hamstring, forcing the Celtic manager to make a precautionary decision.

The revelation was particularly concerning because the youngster has previously suffered a serious hamstring problem that kept him out of action for several months.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the match, O’Neill explained the circumstances behind the substitution.

“He was feeling his hamstring.

“I’m not surprised he was feeling his hamstring at half-time.

“He wanted to continue, but I thought, no, no, listen.

“He had a big hamstring problem the last time way back.

“He was out for a number of months and he was just feeling it.

“Again, I wasn’t surprised because he’s played very, very little football.

“Really pleased for him, delighted for him.

“I thought he did great.”

Those comments will naturally have left Celtic supporters concerned about the possibility of another injury setback for a player who had just delivered one of the most impressive performances of his young career.

Osmand’s development has been particularly encouraging, and his brace against Hearts demonstrated the composure and attacking instinct that could make him a valuable option for O’Neill. Having waited for an opportunity to start, he responded by scoring twice before the interval.

His first goal came after Camilo Duran played him through, with the forward keeping his composure to finish. The second followed soon afterwards, as Osmand headed home from close range after Duran helped keep the move alive.

It was exactly the kind of performance that could strengthen a young player’s position within the squad. Unfortunately, the hamstring discomfort meant his afternoon ended earlier than expected.

O’Neill was unwilling to gamble with the youngster’s fitness, particularly given his previous injury history. With Celtic already firmly in control of the match, allowing Osmand to continue would have offered little benefit compared with the potential risk of aggravating the problem.

The Celtic manager also revealed that the club’s physiotherapist had advised that the forward should be withdrawn.

“It was a hamstring problem at half-time, not surprised really because he’s not played that much but it was more precautionary than anything else,” O’Neill said.

He added: “Tim, the physiotherapist, said just leave him out and I think he would have said that even if it had been nil-nil.”

That explanation offers some reassurance. Rather than confirming a lengthy absence, O’Neill described the decision as precautionary, suggesting the club wanted to avoid taking unnecessary risks with a player who has already experienced significant hamstring trouble.

More importantly, the manager provided a positive update when asked whether Osmand could feature against Celta Vigo on Thursday night.

“Yes, exactly. I think he wanted to continue for a while, but I think he’s saw sense and he’s… yeah. But he should be okay for Thursday.”

That is the news Celtic supporters will be desperate to hear, although his condition will need to be monitored before any final decision is made about his involvement.

The timing is significant. Celtic are preparing for a crucial Europa League encounter against Celta Vigo after losing their opening two league-phase matches against Ferencvaros and Benfica. O’Neill needs his available attacking options ready for a game that could have a major influence on the club’s European campaign.

Osmand’s performance against Hearts has strengthened his case for further opportunities, and his potential availability would provide the manager with another option in attack.

The youngster has also enjoyed previous success against Hearts, scoring against them last season to help Celtic secure the title. His latest brace against the same opposition added another memorable chapter to that record and reinforced the excitement surrounding his progress.

For now, there is no confirmation that Osmand has suffered another lengthy injury. The concern stems from the discomfort he reported at half-time and the history that made O’Neill particularly cautious.

That distinction matters, because the last thing Celtic need is unnecessary panic surrounding a player who may simply require careful management.

Nevertheless, supporters will hope the club has caught the problem early and that the youngster can recover in time for Thursday’s European test.

After turning a difficult spell into a spectacular 7-1 victory, Celtic have every reason to feel encouraged. But Osmand’s situation serves as a reminder that even the most memorable afternoons can bring unexpected concerns.

The positive news is that O’Neill expects him to be available against Celta Vigo. Celtic supporters will now hope that prediction proves correct and that the youngster can continue building on a breakthrough performance without another frustrating spell on the sidelines.
