NafisaLeeds United have had their appeal over Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s disputed goal accepted, handing the striker a significant boost after the Premier League initially credited Jayden Bogle with the effort against Newcastle United.
The decision brings an end to a bizarre episode from Leeds’ emphatic 4-1 victory at Elland Road, where Calvert-Lewin appeared convinced that he had scored his side’s second goal before discovering that the strike had instead been awarded to his teammate.
What initially looked like a straightforward goal quickly became a talking point after officials determined that Bogle had made the final contact with the ball.
Leeds were not prepared to leave the matter there.
The club appealed the decision, and a second panel has now reviewed the footage before reaching a different conclusion.
Leeds win appeal over Calvert-Lewin goal
Calvert-Lewin can officially add another goal to his tally after the Premier League’s Goal Accreditation Appeals Panel overturned the original decision.
The striker rose to meet James Justin’s cross in the 34th minute, with his header finding the back of the net to put Leeds 2-0 ahead.
The goal was initially credited to Calvert-Lewin before the Goal Accreditation Panel subsequently determined that the ball had made contact with Bogle after the striker’s header.
Because Bogle was judged to have made the final touch before the ball crossed the line, the goal was reassigned to the Leeds right-back.
Calvert-Lewin then scored again just before half-time, seemingly completing a brace on the night — although the official records still showed Bogle as the scorer of the earlier goal.
Leeds subsequently challenged the decision.
Their appeal has now been successful, with the Premier League confirming that Calvert-Lewin should receive the goal after a review of the footage.
A Premier League statement confirmed: “The second goal of Leeds United’s 4-1 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League has been awarded to Dominic Calvert-Lewin after an appeal by the club.”
The appeal means Calvert-Lewin’s season tally rises to three Premier League goals, while the assist for the goal has also been reassigned.
James Justin gets the assist
The change does not simply affect the goalscorer.
Because Calvert-Lewin is now officially recognised as the player who scored the goal, his previous assist is removed and the assist is instead credited to Justin, whose cross created the opportunity.
That means Leeds’ second goal is now officially recorded as a Calvert-Lewin strike with Justin providing the delivery.
The Premier League confirmed that its appeals panel reviewed the footage before reaching the revised decision.
It also means Bogle loses the goal from his official tally despite initially being credited with it.
The right-back will at least have the consolation of having played a major role in an impressive Leeds performance, having been involved in the scramble that created the controversy in the first place.
Calvert-Lewin’s Newcastle performance gets its full reward
The decision adds another layer to what was already an excellent evening for Calvert-Lewin.
Leeds dismantled Newcastle 4-1 at Elland Road, with Lewis Miley’s own goal opening the scoring before the disputed second strike.
Calvert-Lewin then officially scored Leeds’ third in first-half stoppage time, while Noah Okafor added a fourth shortly after the restart.
Bazoumana Touré eventually pulled one back for Newcastle in the closing stages, but the damage had already been done.
The victory moved Leeds up to third in the Premier League table and continued their unbeaten start to the campaign.
For Calvert-Lewin, however, the appeal victory provides an additional reward.
What looked like one goal and an assist immediately after the match has now been transformed into an official brace.
More importantly, the Premier League’s final ruling means the confusion surrounding Leeds’ second goal has finally been put to bed.
Bogle may have initially been handed the credit, but after Leeds challenged the decision, Calvert-Lewin gets his goal back — officially.
