NafisaLeeds United have been handed a worrying injury blow against Brentford after Joe Rodon was forced off during the first half at Elland Road.
Daniel Farke had gone into Sunday’s clash with a near fully fit squad, with the return of Gabriel Gudmundsson and Willy Gnonto providing an extra boost ahead of a huge Premier League test.
But that positive news did not last long.
With the score still goalless, Leeds suddenly found themselves dealing with an injury concern that could not have come at a worse time, with the summer transfer window now approaching its final hours.
Rodon was forced off around the half-hour mark after chasing a ball in behind and attempting to clear it for a throw-in.
The Welsh centre-back immediately appeared to feel something in his left hamstring before going down.
Leeds’ medical staff came onto the pitch to assess him, but it quickly became clear that Rodon would not be able to continue.
Nico Elvedi was introduced in his place, giving the summer signing an unexpected opportunity to come into the heart of Farke’s defence.
Rodon could subsequently be seen walking around the outside of the pitch before briefly speaking with his manager.
The timing of the problem will be particularly concerning for Farke.
Leeds were still level at 0-0 when Rodon departed, but Brentford soon found the breakthrough after the Whites struggled to clear their lines.
Keane Lewis-Potter eventually delivered a cross into the box, with Kevin Schade stabbing the ball home to put the visitors ahead.
Suddenly, Leeds were not only chasing the game but also facing uncertainty over one of their established defenders.
The extent of Rodon’s injury remains unclear, but the early signs will be a concern given that he was taken off rather than attempting to play through the problem.
More importantly, the injury could leave Farke with a serious squad-management headache.
If Rodon is facing any significant spell on the sidelines, Leeds would be left with only three fit senior centre-backs available.
That is a particularly uncomfortable position with the transfer window shutting at 11pm on Tuesday.
Farke has already overseen a summer of carefully targeted recruitment, with Leeds prioritising quality rather than simply adding numbers to the squad.
The arrival of Elvedi has strengthened the defensive options, while the German’s introduction against Brentford could prove particularly valuable given the circumstances.
However, losing Rodon could potentially change the situation entirely.
Leeds have already been linked with further defensive reinforcements throughout the summer, and any serious hamstring injury could force the club to reconsider whether another centre-back is required before the deadline.
For now, the Whites will have to wait for further assessment before knowing the seriousness of Rodon’s problem.
But the timing could hardly be worse.
Farke had finally welcomed players back from injury and appeared to have a near clean bill of health heading into one of the biggest tests of Leeds’ early-season campaign.
Instead, Rodon’s sudden hamstring problem has left the manager facing another concern — and potentially a frantic final few days in the transfer market.
