NafisaLeeds United have reportedly struck another blow in their increasingly impressive summer transfer window, with Michael Zetterer arriving in Yorkshire to complete his medical ahead of a move to Elland Road.
The German goalkeeper’s arrival comes at an intriguing moment for both Leeds and Manchester United. Earlier in the summer, United dealt a blow to the Whites by securing Karl Darlow, leaving Daniel Farke needing to reshape his goalkeeping department.
Leeds have responded in spectacular fashion.
After making James Trafford their club-record signing, the Whites have now moved for another experienced goalkeeper, with Zetterer reportedly choosing a move to Yorkshire despite interest from elsewhere.
And the timing could hardly be better for Leeds.
Trafford made an impressive competitive debut in the Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest, keeping a clean sheet as Anton Stach’s late free-kick secured a dramatic 1-0 victory at the City Ground.
Meanwhile, Manchester United endured a miserable start to their own campaign, suffering a 2-0 defeat against newly promoted Sunderland.
That contrast has only added to the excitement surrounding Leeds’ summer recruitment.
Michael Zetterer arrives in Leeds
According to German outlet Sport1, Zetterer arrived in England on Saturday morning and is expected to undergo a medical with Leeds.
An agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt is not yet officially complete, but negotiations are believed to be at an advanced stage.
Frankfurt are reportedly willing to sanction an initial loan, with discussions also taking place over an option-to-buy clause.
The 31-year-old’s arrival is particularly notable because his agent had previously ruled out a move from Frankfurt to Leeds.
That stance appears to have changed, with Zetterer now seemingly on the verge of becoming Farke’s latest signing.
The goalkeeper made 28 appearances for Frankfurt in all competitions last season and has considerable experience at the highest level of German football.
For Leeds, he would provide an experienced alternative behind Trafford as they prepare for the demands of life back in the Premier League.
Leeds respond to Darlow blow
The move also carries an interesting subplot involving Manchester United.
Darlow’s departure from Leeds to United was a painful moment for the Whites, particularly given the goalkeeper’s experience at Elland Road.
Rather than allowing that setback to derail their plans, Leeds have responded by completely rebuilding their goalkeeper department.
Trafford arrived from Manchester City in a record-breaking deal and immediately demonstrated why Farke and the Leeds hierarchy were prepared to make such a significant investment.
The England international kept Forest at bay on his Premier League debut before watching Stach produce the decisive moment at the other end.
Now Zetterer could become the latest addition.
If the deal is completed, Leeds will have replaced Darlow with a goalkeeper who brings Bundesliga experience, while also making Trafford the clear No.1.
Another blow for Manchester United?
The timing makes the situation even sweeter for Leeds supporters.
United were able to take Darlow away from Elland Road, but Leeds have subsequently invested heavily in strengthening their squad while enjoying an excellent opening weekend.
Trafford’s clean sheet helped Farke’s side secure three points at one of the toughest away grounds in the division, while United began their campaign with a disappointing defeat against a newly promoted opponent.
And now Leeds appear ready to add another goalkeeper to their ranks.
Zetterer is not simply being brought in to fill a squad place. His experience means he could provide genuine competition and reliable cover for Trafford throughout a demanding Premier League campaign.
What happens to Lucas Perri?
The potential arrival of Zetterer is also likely to accelerate Lucas Perri’s departure.
Perri remained on the bench during Leeds’ victory over Forest, but his future has been uncertain for much of the summer.
Torino have been linked with the Brazilian goalkeeper, although a deal has yet to be completed.
With Zetterer now seemingly on his way, the conditions for Perri to leave could be much more favourable.
Alex Cairns has committed his future to Leeds and is expected to remain as third choice, meaning Farke could soon have a clear hierarchy: Trafford as his first choice, Zetterer as experienced backup and Cairns providing further depth.
For Leeds fans, it represents another statement of intent.
The Whites were hurt when United took Darlow away from Elland Road.
Their response has been to spend big on Trafford, start the Premier League season with a clean sheet and three points, and now move for another experienced goalkeeper.
If Zetterer completes his medical and puts pen to paper as expected, Leeds will have another reason to believe they are building something very different at Elland Road this season.
