NafisaDavid Moyes once remarked that Everton challenging Manchester City’s wealth was like taking a knife to a gunfight but while the Blues held their own against their formidable opponents here, their lack of sharpness ultimately proved their undoing.
Following a 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest, who entered the weekend ahead of Pep Guardiola’s team, Moyes praised his side’s ability to compete in every match since his return.
For much of this game, that competitiveness was evident, but City’s relentless passing game can wear down any opponent, and it did so here, with a late brace resulting in the first two-goal loss of Moyes’ second tenure, following 1-0 defeats to Aston Villa and Liverpool.
Even without their prolific striker Erling Haaland, modern football’s nearest counterpart to Dixie Dean, City had ample firepower to overcome a well-drilled and industrious Everton side that was more butter knife than machete when it came to clinical finishing.
Those riches that City have possessed since Moyes’ first spell at Goodison Park don’t just enable you to bring in big money signings though.
Their academy is now among the finest in the country when it comes to a production line of talent and while there was no Phil Foden, one of their latest gems Nico O’Reilly proving the difference.
