NafisaCharlie Mulgrew couldn’t resist taking a swipe at Derek McInnes after the Hearts boss hit out at Celtic’s VAR decision.
The former Hoops defender has caused irritation in Gorgie throughout the title race by repeatedly casting doubt on Hearts’ legitimacy – despite the Tynecastle side sitting top of the table since September.
Mulgrew also grabbed headlines last week when he responded to a profanity-laced fan message by stating: “My message to the Hearts fans is, I’ve got more titles than the full club.”
The pundit was back in the spotlight again after another dramatic twist in the title race saw Celtic grab victory in highly contentious circumstances at Fir Park.
After Hearts strolled to a 3-0 win over Falkirk, attention switched to North Lanarkshire where Motherwell thought they had salvaged a dramatic late point when they levelled it at 2-2 in the closing minutes.
But Martin O’Neill’s men were given one final opportunity when Well midfielder Sam Nicholson was punished for handball following a 20-second VAR check – with Kelechi Iheanacho blasting in a 99th-minute winner from the spot.
The decision triggered anger across the football world, with prominent voices including Gary Lineker and Jeff Stelling insisting referee John Beaton had made the wrong call.
And just days after Hearts were denied a penalty of their own in a 1-1 draw at Motherwell, McInnes didn’t mince his words as he vented from the capital: “I shouldn’t be commenting on another game, but I knew I was going to get asked the question. And having seen that, it feels like us against everybody.
“When you see the two that we didn’t get at the weekend and then you see that, how they can arrive at that situation. Celtic have, I’m sure, more than a touch of fortune at getting that penalty.
“But I’m getting more and more dismayed at some of the decisions that our referees are coming up with. It’s such a bad decision. Motherwell must feel totally aggrieved about it.
“I had to keep looking at it. I thought I was missing something when I was watching it. I had to ask, what am I looking for here? So, it’s actually quite disgusting, to be honest. It feels like us against everybody.”
And Mulgrew wasted no time reacting on Instagram, reposting a picture of the frustrated Hearts boss alongside his own viral 2022 interview clip saying: “Did he aye? (He’s) raging isn’t he?”
