NafisaLeeds United look set for another change at the heart of their defence before the transfer window closes, with Daniel Farke potentially preparing to welcome a familiar face from his time in the Bundesliga.
The Whites have already made one major alteration to their backline this summer. Pascal Struijk’s departure for Brighton left a sizeable gap to fill, but the 49ers acted quickly to bring in Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo.
That appeared to have settled one of Farke’s defensive priorities. However, another change now appears increasingly likely, with Sebastiaan Bornauw considering a move back to Germany after just one season at Elland Road.
Farke has made it clear that he would rather keep the Belgian defender, but if Bornauw does get his wish, Leeds will need to find a replacement.
And judging by the latest developments, the club may already have their man.

Leeds’ pursuit of another centre-back has gathered momentum, with Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi emerging as a potential replacement for Bornauw.
The 29-year-old Switzerland international has just one year remaining on his contract in Germany, making his situation particularly interesting for Leeds as they look to strengthen without committing to an excessive transfer fee.
The potential move has also received a positive reaction from Sky Sports pundit and Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard.
Following Florian Plettenberg’s report linking Leeds with Elvedi, Hatchard gave his verdict on the potential signing.
“Very solid and experienced. I think he’d be a smart signing by Leeds. They are making a habit of those.”
That is quite the endorsement from someone who regularly watches German football and has extensive knowledge of the Bundesliga.
Elvedi certainly has the experience to back up Hatchard’s assessment. He has spent the majority of his career at Monchengladbach and has accumulated hundreds of appearances at senior level.
He has also played in the Champions League and Europa League, while his experience at international level is another major asset. The Swiss defender has earned 73 caps for his country, giving him considerably more experience than many of the defenders Leeds could realistically target.
There is another reason why the potential deal makes plenty of sense for the Whites.
Farke already knows exactly what Elvedi can offer.
The German manager was in charge of Monchengladbach during the 2022/23 campaign, meaning he has previously worked with the defender and would not be relying solely on scouting reports when deciding whether Elvedi can fit into his system.
That familiarity could be particularly valuable at Leeds.

There was understandable frustration surrounding the possibility of Bornauw leaving Elland Road.
Farke has already spoken positively about the Belgian and clearly sees value in having him around the squad. Losing a player the manager wanted to keep would have created another problem for Leeds at a time when the club still have several other positions to strengthen.
The concern would have been that the 49ers might have been forced to spend valuable time searching for another centre-back after Bornauw’s departure.
However, the emergence of Elvedi changes the picture.
Rather than scrambling for a replacement late in the window, Leeds appear to have identified a defender who already fits the profile Farke wants.
Elvedi is experienced, tactically intelligent and comfortable playing in different defensive systems. Those qualities could make him particularly useful to Farke, especially given Leeds’ ability to switch between a back four and a back three.
The timing is also encouraging.
Leeds need players who can contribute quickly rather than signings who require an extended adaptation period before becoming comfortable in the Premier League. Elvedi has spent years competing at a high level in Germany and has experience of European football and international tournaments.
That does not guarantee he would immediately succeed in England, of course, but it significantly reduces the uncertainty surrounding the move.
There is also a broader point to consider about Leeds’ recruitment this summer.
The club have already shown a willingness to invest heavily when they believe a player can make a genuine difference. James Trafford arrived from Manchester City for a club-record fee, while Muharemovic was brought in from Sassuolo after Leeds identified him as a long-term defensive option.
Harry Wilson’s arrival on a free transfer added another experienced Premier League player to the squad.
Elvedi would fit into that same strategy.
He may not be the most glamorous name Leeds could have pursued, but there is an argument that this is precisely why the potential deal is so appealing.
The Whites do not simply need big names. They need reliable Premier League-level performers capable of giving Farke consistency over the course of a long campaign.
And if Hatchard’s assessment is anything to go by, Leeds may have identified another shrewd piece of business.
The biggest question now is whether Bornauw actually leaves and whether Leeds can complete a deal for Elvedi.
But with the defender entering the final year of his Monchengladbach contract and Farke already familiar with his qualities, the foundations for a sensible transfer are certainly there.
For a Leeds side still looking to strengthen several areas before the window closes, getting a potential Bornauw replacement lined up this early could prove extremely important.
