After spending three years with Leeds, the experienced Welsh international opted to begin a new chapter elsewhere, completing a free transfer to Manchester United. While the move surprised some supporters, Darlow has now spoken openly about why he made the decision, revealing that once the opportunity arrived, there was only ever going to be one outcome.
The veteran goalkeeper admits the biggest influence behind his decision was his own belief that Manchester United represented an opportunity too good to turn down.
Manchester United confirmed the signing of Karl Darlow on a free transfer following the expiration of his Leeds United contract, with the 35-year-old putting pen to paper on a deal until June 2028, including the option of a further year.
Expected to provide experienced cover in United’s goalkeeping department, Darlow says accepting the move was an easy decision because of the club’s stature in world football.
Darlow reveals why he chose Manchester United
Speaking during his first interview after arriving at Old Trafford, the former Leeds goalkeeper explained that nobody needed to convince him to make the switch.
“I think the statue of the club, obviously the history and what it brings and probably, in my opinion the biggest club in the world.”
Darlow admitted that hearing Manchester United wanted to sign him immediately made up his mind.
“As soon as you hear a call from a club like Manchester United, then yeah, the obvious answer is YES, and I’m just delighted it’s gone through.”
The experienced goalkeeper also shared his excitement about joining the Red Devils and becoming part of the squad.
“I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United (the biggest club in the world). I’m joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I’m really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands.
“This is a really special opportunity; everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I cannot wait to play my part in supporting my team-mates and helping to drive the group forwards.”
Manchester United’s Director of Football Jason Wilcox also welcomed Darlow’s arrival, praising both his quality and professionalism.
“Karl has proven his ability to perform at the highest level, his work ethic and determined personality make him a really strong addition to our squad.
“We are delighted to add a player of his quality and experience to our excellent goalkeeping group.”
Darlow leaves Leeds after making 38 appearances for the Whites since joining in 2023, bringing an end to a spell in which he provided valuable experience and competition in the goalkeeping department.
His latest comments make it clear that, when Manchester United came calling, he personally believed the chance to join what he describes as “the biggest club in the world” was simply impossible to refuse.
Leeds will now continue their search for a replacement as Daniel Farke reshapes his squad, while Darlow begins what he hopes will be another memorable chapter at Old Trafford.
