Rangers secure exciting academy talent on long-term professional deal

Rangers Academy have officially confirmed that Luca Rankin has signed his first professional contract with the club.

The highly-rated midfielder, who celebrated his 16th birthday last month, has committed his future to the Light Blues until the summer of 2029.

Rankin featured regularly for both the Under-19s and Under-17s during last season, helping both teams enjoy league title-winning campaigns. He has also represented Scotland at Under-16 level.

The teenager has been regarded as one of the academy’s most promising talents for some time, and his new deal represents another positive step in Rangers’ efforts to retain their top young players.

Club officials believe the midfielder has all the attributes required to continue progressing through the academy system, with hopes that he can eventually challenge for opportunities at senior level.

Interim Head of Academy David McCallum welcomed the agreement and praised the youngster’s commitment to the club.

He commented:

“We are thrilled that Luca has signed his first professional contract at the club.

“The interest in Luca from elsewhere has been well-documented, as has been the case for several of our 2010-born age group this year, but he believes in the opportunities that exist here, and his decision reflects the clear pathway we provide for young players.

“Luca has taken every challenge in his stride throughout his time in the academy, and he will be supported and challenged every step of the way by the fantastic staff we have here at the club.”

With his long-term future now secured, Rankin will continue his development at Rangers as the club hopes another academy graduate can eventually make the leap to first-team football in the years ahead.
