Jack Butland has opened up about how surprised he was following his departure from Rangers this summer.
The former England goalkeeper has now officially completed a switch to Hull City after the newly-promoted Premier League side secured his signature.
He is now preparing for a return to English football after spending the last three years at Ibrox.
The transfer came as an unexpected development for many Rangers supporters, with the deal progressing in a remarkably short space of time.
Ivor Pandur has arrived as his replacement through an unusual arrangement that saw both clubs pay transfer fees, with the Croatian joining Rangers in a £6million deal.
Speaking publicly for the first time since leaving Govan, Butland admitted he shared the same surprise felt by many fans.
Butland responds after Derek McInnes comments resurfaced
There has been significant turnover at Rangers during the early stages of the summer window, with several additions already arriving at the club.
Derek McInnes has also taken charge, becoming the third different Rangers manager in as many seasons.
His appointment means there will be a different first-choice goalkeeper at Ibrox following Butland’s departure.
That makes the situation even more surprising considering the experienced stopper had appeared on talkSPORT less than two weeks earlier, speaking enthusiastically about the prospect of working under McInnes.
Presenter Gabby Agbonlahor revisited those comments on Monday, prompting Butland to explain that he had absolutely no idea a transfer was about to happen.
In his first public interview since leaving Rangers, he said:
“It’s football, you should know it. It’s incredible. I had no idea at that point [last time on talkSPORT]. No truer words were said last time so it’s a bittersweet one.
“Letting go, I don’t think you can when you’ve been at a club like Rangers. You don’t really let go. It’s been really tough. I’ll never be far from it, I fully enjoyed the last three years, it’s been a huge part of my career and one that I’m very grateful about having the opportunity to be a part of.
“It’s bittersweet, sad to leave, but really excited about the opportunity.”
Hull City’s financial situation helped shape Rangers’ decision
There is little doubt that Butland feels disappointed by how his Rangers chapter came to an end.
Part of that stems from an inconsistent Scottish Premiership campaign last season, where the club struggled to reach the standards expected at Ibrox.
However, footballing reasons were not the only factor behind the move.
Hull City were required to generate around £6million before 30 June, prior to the start of the new financial year, in order to avoid the possibility of a points deduction under financial regulations.
That presented Rangers with an ideal opportunity to secure Pandur while simultaneously allowing Butland to move in the opposite direction for £3million.
Although the experienced goalkeeper understandably felt blindsided by the speed of events, Rangers viewed the deal as too good an opportunity to ignore.
With the goalkeeping position now reshaped and further transfer activity expected before the window closes, attention turns fully towards McInnes’ rebuilding project as Rangers prepare for the season ahead.
