Hull City appear determined to follow that blueprint this summer. After securing their return to England’s top flight, the Tigers have wasted little time identifying experienced names capable of helping the club establish itself back among the elite.
One of their biggest priorities has been finding a reliable presence between the posts, and that search has now reached its conclusion.
Premier League newcomers Hull City have completed the signing of goalkeeper Jack Butland, making him their first arrival of the summer transfer window.
The 33-year-old joins from Rangers for an undisclosed fee, signing a two-year contract with the option of extending his stay by a further 12 months as Sergej Jakirovic continues assembling his squad ahead of the Tigers’ first Premier League season in nine years.
The nine-cap England international featured in every minute of Rangers’ 2025/26 Scottish Premiership campaign, making 55 appearances across all competitions before bringing his three-year spell at Ibrox to an end after 157 matches.
During his time in Glasgow, Butland lifted the Scottish League Cup in his debut season and also collected both the club’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards.
Before moving north of the border, the experienced goalkeeper spent seven seasons with Stoke City, making 77 Premier League appearances, while also enjoying top-flight football with Crystal Palace.
Butland also etched his name into England’s history books by becoming the nation’s youngest-ever senior goalkeeper when he made his international debut in 2012 at just 19 years of age.
Speaking after completing the move, Butland said:
“I’m delighted it’s all sorted now and I’m really excited to be here.
“The Premier League is the best league in the world and, personally, it’s a great opportunity to be on the biggest stage again. I believe it’s the level I’m capable of playing at, and I’ve done it before.”
Hull secured promotion back to the Premier League after defeating Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley back in May.
The club also made important financial decisions earlier this week, sanctioning the departures of goalkeeper Ivor Pandur—who joined Rangers—and midfielder Aidon Shehu before Tuesday’s Profit and Sustainability Regulations deadline.
Those outgoing transfers helped ease concerns over a potential points deduction while also creating room for fresh additions ahead of the new season.
Butland’s arrival is expected to be only the beginning of a busy summer at the MKM Stadium, with Hull continuing to explore further reinforcements as they prepare for life back in the Premier League.
