That has certainly been the case with Rangers’ latest midfield addition, whose reputation stretches well beyond his performances on the pitch.
Jobe Bellingham has now shown his support for Dan Neil following the midfielder’s move to Rangers, having formed a close friendship with him during their years together at Sunderland.
Neil became Rangers’ fifth signing of an eventful transfer window after his arrival was officially confirmed on Wednesday afternoon.
The 24-year-old spent eight years with Sunderland, making more than 200 appearances across all competitions before bringing his time at the Stadium of Light to an end.
Rangers appear to have secured an impressive piece of business, particularly given the level of interest Neil attracted from several other clubs before deciding to head for Ibrox.
During his spell on Wearside, Neil established himself as a huge favourite among Sunderland supporters and built strong relationships with many teammates.
One of those was Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jobe Bellingham, who credits Neil as one of the biggest influences during his development.
Neil joins defenders Ben Godfrey and Ross McCrorie, striker Lawrence Shankland, and goalkeeper Ivor Pandur as Rangers’ latest additions under new manager Derek McInnes.
Before officially introducing himself to Rangers supporters, Neil posted an emotional farewell message to Sunderland fans before expressing his excitement about beginning life in Glasgow.
He wrote on Instagram:
“Delighted to sign for this massive football club. Can’t wait to get started and looking forward to the new challenge ahead.”
Bellingham responded by showing his approval, liking the post shortly after it was published.
Several current and former teammates also reacted, with ex-Leeds United forward Sam Greenwood commenting:
“All the best my mate.”
The reaction underlined the respect Neil continues to command from those who have shared a dressing room with him.
Earlier this year, Bellingham had already spoken at length about the impact Neil made during their time together at Sunderland, offering a heartfelt tribute to the midfielder’s leadership.
He said:
“When I think back on my fondest memories – and even some of the toughest days – in a Sunderland shirt, Dan was always by my side.
“In difficult moments, he never stopped trying to help me and everyone else around the team and the club. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner through both the highs and the lows.
“At times, it felt like I was playing not just for myself, but for him and his aspirations. You could see how much Sunderland meant to him, and that passion spread throughout the entire club.
“In my eyes, he was an incredible captain and he will always be a Sunderland legend.”
Neil may already hold legendary status among Sunderland supporters, but Rangers fans will now hope those same leadership qualities, determination and commitment can help him create an equally memorable chapter at Ibrox.
With expectations high and silverware the ultimate objective, the midfielder now has the opportunity to prove why so many people who know him best believe Rangers have landed a player capable of making a lasting impact.
