NafisaRangers supporters have spent much of the summer keeping a close eye on transfer developments, with speculation continuing over a possible return for Václav Černý as Derek McInnes looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the new campaign.
While excitement around potential arrivals on the pitch refuses to die down, there has also been plenty of movement behind the scenes at Ibrox as McInnes continues assembling the coaching structure he believes can help restore Rangers to the top of Scottish football.
Supporters have already seen several fresh appointments made away from the first-team dressing room, and another familiar face now appears set to rejoin the club.
This time, however, it is not a player making the headlines.
Instead, it is one of Rangers’ greatest-ever servants.
According to reports, Rangers have agreed a deal that will see club legend Allan McGregor make a sensational return to Ibrox as part of Derek McInnes’ backroom staff.
The former Scotland international has reportedly been brought in to replace Sal Bibbo, who recently departed for Coventry City.
Reports also claim McGregor has already been spotted alongside McInnes at Rangers’ training base as preparations continue ahead of the new season.
Although an official club announcement is still awaited, the move is understood to be nearing completion after McInnes personally pushed to bring the former goalkeeper back to the club.
McGregor’s return marks another emotional chapter in his long association with Rangers.
The 44-year-old remains one of the most decorated goalkeepers in the club’s history after making 505 appearances across two separate spells at Ibrox.
During his playing career, he helped Rangers lift four Scottish Premiership titles, four Scottish Cups and five League Cups while also playing a major role in the club’s runs to the UEFA Europa League finals in 2008 and 2022.
Since retiring from playing in 2023, McGregor has largely remained away from the spotlight, apart from a brief spell as goalkeeping coach during Barry Ferguson’s interim coaching staff.
That short coaching experience now looks set to become a permanent opportunity under McInnes.
Speaking after taking over as Rangers manager, McInnes has repeatedly stressed the importance of surrounding himself with experienced people who understand both the demands and expectations that come with representing the club.
Adding someone of McGregor’s stature certainly fits that approach.
The former goalkeeper also enjoyed success away from Rangers during his career, helping Hull City earn promotion to the Premier League while collecting 42 caps for Scotland before eventually bringing his playing days to a close.
Should the expected announcement arrive, McGregor will become another important addition to McInnes’ growing backroom team, which already includes Alan Archibald, Paul Sheerin, James Barrow and Craig Clark.
With Rangers continuing to reshape both the playing squad and coaching department, supporters will hope the return of one of the club’s most iconic figures can provide another boost as preparations for the new campaign gather momentum.
