Recruitment remains a key focus, but equally important is the vision being put in place by the man now occupying the manager’s office.
With pre-season preparations gathering pace and transfer discussions continuing behind the scenes, Rangers supporters are beginning to get a clearer picture of what the future might look like.
New arrivals have already started to filter through the door, while speculation continues to surround several current stars and potential targets.
What has become increasingly apparent, however, is that Rangers’ new manager had options elsewhere before ultimately making his decision.
According to Football Insider, Derek McInnes rejected an approach from Ipswich Town before accepting the opportunity to take charge at Ibrox.
The newly-promoted Premier League outfit were searching for a replacement after Kieran McKenna stepped away from Portman Road and football, with the then-Hearts boss emerging as a candidate.
Gary O’Neil eventually secured the position at the end of last week, but sources have revealed that McInnes, 54, held discussions with Ipswich before deciding against the move in favour of remaining in Scotland.
His appointment as Rangers manager was officially confirmed on June 17, just weeks after the club had already secured Lawrence Shankland on a free transfer from Hearts.
There was also speculation that several former players could potentially follow McInnes to Glasgow, including Cammy Devlin, Claudio Braga and Alexandros Kyziridis, although interest in those deals has reportedly cooled.
Football Insider had previously disclosed earlier this month that McInnes was firmly in contention for the Ipswich vacancy as the Championship side began evaluating options following McKenna’s departure.
Why Rangers Always Had the Advantage
For many Rangers supporters, the reported interest from Ipswich was unlikely to trigger any real concern.
McInnes’ connection to Rangers has never been a secret. Raised as a supporter of the club, he also enjoyed a spell as a player at Ibrox between 1995 and 2000.
After taking the position, McInnes openly admitted that he had “always wanted” the Rangers job, having famously declined the opportunity back in 2017 while managing Aberdeen.
This time, circumstances were different.
Years of additional managerial experience, coupled with successful spells elsewhere, appear to have convinced him that now was the right moment to take on the challenge at his boyhood club.
The decision to reject Premier League interest in favour of Rangers only reinforces how highly he values the opportunity.
Attention Turns to Further Business
The early acquisition of Shankland was viewed as a major statement by Rangers and may only be the beginning of a busy summer.
Ross McCrorie appears increasingly likely to follow him through the doors at Ibrox. The Bristol City wing-back previously worked under McInnes during their time together at Aberdeen and has since accumulated 89 appearances for the Robins after moving south.
Beyond that, Rangers are still expected to strengthen several areas of the squad before the transfer window closes.
Many observers believe central midfield, central defence and the wide attacking positions require further reinforcement. At the same time, uncertainty remains over the futures of several established names.
John Souttar, Nico Raskin, Bojan Miovski and Nedim Bajrami have all been linked with potential exits, and should any of those departures materialise, replacements will quickly become a priority.
Particularly in the case of Raskin, many supporters would argue that losing such an influential presence would leave a significant void to fill.
For now, though, Rangers fans can take encouragement from one clear message: when given the choice between the Premier League and Ibrox, Derek McInnes chose Rangers. And that decision alone may tell supporters everything they need to know about his belief in the project now unfolding in Glasgow.
