Celtic fans have been left raging after Kasper Schmeichel chose to skip a huge moment for the club and instead attend another high profile match elsewhere.
Martin O’Neill’s side were taking on St Mirren at Hampden Park in a massive Scottish Cup semi final, yet their experienced goalkeeper was not even in the country.
The 39 year old, who remains under contract at Celtic but is unlikely to feature again due to injury, made the decision not to attend the match with his teammates.
Instead, Schmeichel travelled to the Etihad Stadium to watch the Premier League title clash between Manchester City and Arsenal.
While Celtic were battling for a place in the final back in Glasgow, Schmeichel was watching his former side City try to close the gap at the top of the table in a crucial title race encounter.
The decision did not sit well with supporters.
Despite the fact that his Celtic future looks uncertain following a long term injury, many fans still expected him to be present at Hampden to support the squad in such an important fixture.
Schmeichel only added fuel to the fire with his social media activity before kick off.
He shared a photo of himself in a Celtic shirt with the caption: “Big day of football ahead! Come on the boys.”
But shortly after, he posted another image from the Etihad holding the Premier League trophy, adding: “Big game at the Etihad as well. Reunited with an old friend.”
That “old friend” was a nod to his famous title win with Leicester City back in 2016.
For many fans, though, that explanation did little to calm the anger.
“You can forgive bad performances, but you can’t forgive this kind of attitude. Shocking.”
“Proper slap in the face to every fan watching that. Disgusted.”
“This is beyond embarrassing!”
“Captain of the club and this is how you show up? Absolutely disgraceful. Lost all respect for him after this.”
The backlash has been intense, with many supporters questioning the standards expected at the club, especially from senior figures.
With his contract set to expire this summer and doubts already surrounding his future, this latest episode has only added to the growing feeling that his time at Celtic is coming to an end, and not in the way many would have hoped.
