Celtic’s 3–1 victory over Motherwell produced plenty of talking points, but one moment in particular sparked debate — not just because of the VAR decision, but also because of a surprising reaction from the commentary box.
The key flashpoint arrived midway through the second half from a Celtic corner.
The delivery floated toward the back post where Daizen Maeda had managed to find space behind the Motherwell defence. With the ball dropping perfectly and the Japanese forward poised to head into an open target from close range, Motherwell defender Emmanuel Longelo suddenly wrapped his arms around him and dragged him to the ground.
In real time, referee John Beaton allowed play to continue, signalling for a goal kick.
However, VAR official Kevin Clancy quickly stepped in and asked Beaton to review the incident on the pitchside monitor. After taking another look at the footage, the referee overturned his original decision — awarding Celtic a penalty and showing Longelo a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
The decision completely changed the momentum of the game.
At the time, the score was locked at 1–1 and Motherwell were still very much in the contest. But once the penalty was given, Tomas Cvancara stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to give Celtic the lead.
With Motherwell reduced to ten men, the task immediately became far more difficult for the visitors. Celtic eventually pushed on and sealed a 3–1 victory — a result made even more significant after Hearts later lost to Kilmarnock, leaving the Hoops just two points off the top of the Premiership with eight matches remaining.
Despite the VAR review and the clear footage shown afterwards, not everyone watching the game was immediately convinced by the decision.
BBC Sportsound pundit Stephen Craigan expressed doubts during the live commentary as the incident unfolded.
“I think he ducks down. It’s not the force of Longelo that puts him down, I think he does down himself and tries to head it in.
“It’s a big call. It doesn’t look like a penalty, but stranger things have happened.”
It was a reaction that raised a few eyebrows once the replays were shown.
The footage appeared to clearly show Longelo pulling Maeda to the ground as the Celtic forward prepared to attack the ball at the back post. Without that contact, Maeda would almost certainly have had a free header from only a few yards out.
That is exactly why the red card followed the penalty decision. By hauling Maeda down, Longelo had denied a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Of course, live commentary can often lead to quick judgments before multiple camera angles are available.
Pundits frequently have to react instantly while the incident unfolds in real time, sometimes without the benefit of the clearer replays viewers see moments later.
With the benefit of those replays, however, the decision looked far more straightforward.
And in a match that ultimately swung on that single moment, the VAR intervention proved to be one of the defining calls of Celtic’s crucial win over Motherwell.
