Juventus have softened their stance on Lois Openda
Lois Openda arrived at Juventus on a loan deal last summer, but a mandatory purchase clause meant the Serie A side were required to make the move permanent at the conclusion of the campaign despite the striker managing just two goals.
Leeds have been monitoring the forward for some time and were previously believed to be considering a move that would have required a substantial financial commitment.
Juventus were initially determined to recover the £35m they invested in him. However, that valuation has discouraged several interested clubs following his disappointing campaign.
It would also have represented a major risk for Leeds. According to Tutto Mercato, though, Juventus are now becoming increasingly eager to find a solution and move the striker on this summer.
The report claims the Italian giants are now willing to consider a straightforward loan agreement in order to facilitate Openda’s departure during the current transfer window.
Juventus reportedly recognise that few clubs are willing to meet their previous asking price and are prepared to sanction a temporary move in the hope that strong performances elsewhere could rebuild his value and eventually lead to a permanent transfer.
Why a loan move could suit Leeds perfectly
Had Leeds committed to a significant transfer fee or agreed to an obligation-to-buy arrangement, it would have represented an unusually bold gamble.
Openda scored only twice last season and saw his involvement decrease considerably during the second half of the campaign. Juventus’ earlier valuation appeared more reflective of hope than market reality.
A loan agreement appears far more sensible from Leeds’ perspective, particularly given the belief that the striker still possesses the ability to rediscover the form that previously made him such a highly regarded attacking prospect.
The Whites continue to view him as a player capable of becoming a focal point in their attack if he can return to his best level.
Crucially, his struggles last season mean a temporary move significantly reduces the financial risk. Leeds would have the opportunity to assess whether he can adapt to English football and deliver the goals they need without committing to a sizeable long-term investment immediately.
For that reason, a loan arrangement is likely to be viewed as a far more attractive proposition at Elland Road as the club continue exploring options to strengthen their forward line.
