NafisaThe New Orleans Saints appear satisfied with maintaining a youthful quarterback room. The most experienced QB in terms of wins is Jake Haener, who only entered a game in relief. Beyond that, the group has collectively gone 0-7 in starts. Four quarterbacks, and not even half a season’s worth of starting experience among them.
Kellen Moore views a coaching unit filled with ex-quarterbacks as a sufficient support system for the starter. If he were to reconsider, though, Carson Wentz would be a wise addition to the roster. Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton also believes the pairing would be a logical fit.
Carson Wentz wouldn’t pose a threat to Tyler Shough or Spencer Rattler:
Moton believes Wentz has a “decent chance to beat out rookie second-rounder Tyler Shough, Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler in a battle.” That’s where our views differ. Wentz would be a sensible signing, but the Saints wouldn’t regard him as a starter unless things went seriously wrong during training camp.
Wentz is a former starter, but his days as a first-choice quarterback are likely behind him. This wouldn’t be a scenario where the young prospects are constantly looking over their shoulder. That’s not the kind of environment you want surrounding a possible franchise quarterback.
Shough and Rattler remain the primary contenders to open the season under center. Rattler is entering his sophomore year, while Shough is a first-year player. Both are at a stage in their careers where a seasoned quarterback would be valuable in their growth.
Wentz is the ideal type of veteran to bring in. There would be no strong expectations for him to start. Even if the winner of the Shough vs. Rattler competition were to get injured, the other youngster would likely take over. Wentz would be firmly established as a veteran guide.
Wentz would offer young QBs a seasoned, mobile mentor:
On top of that, Wentz demonstrated mobility earlier in his career. Acquiring a veteran with the ability to move would be smart since both Rattler and Shough will incorporate movement into their play. They’re not going to rip off 80-yard runs, but mobility is part of their style. Wentz could provide real-life insight on that aspect better than the coaches on staff.
We’ve already seen clips of Shough taking off with the ball during OTAs. While not a designated running quarterback, he’s displayed adequate mobility. Play-action rollouts were a frequent part of Rattler’s game last year as well. Wentz also processes the game from both a passing and rushing perspective. That approach could serve as a helpful influence for Shough or Rattler.
