Rayan Ait-Nouri is now being targeted for a summer move by Manchester City, and all parties involved in discussions anticipate a deal to go through, according to fresh reports.

Executives at the Etihad Stadium are currently handling multiple negotiations to both bolster and rejuvenate Pep Guardiola’s squad during the current summer window, with as many as four fresh additions expected before any exits.

Much of the speculation so far this summer has focused on reinforcements in central midfield, particularly in the No.8 role and the zone vacated by Kevin De Bruyne following the expiration of his contract.

AC Milan’s Tijjani Reijnders has emerged as the leading candidate for the deeper of the two midfield roles, with his adaptability across the midfield considered a major asset, while Lyon’s Rayan Cherki remains a primary target in the attacking midfield area.

However, there has also been a persistent belief that Manchester City may look to upgrade their full-back positions, having dealt with numerous changes at left-back due to players operating outside their natural roles and Kyle Walker vacating his spot on the right.

Now, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are actively working on a transfer to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers and Algeria international left-back, Rayan Ait Nouri this summer.

It is outlined that while deals still need to be finalised between the two clubs involved in the potential transfer and with the 23-year-old himself, all sides now anticipate a switch to the Etihad Stadium will be completed.

Ait Nouri is reportedly seen as Manchester City’s main option to reinforce the left-back position this summer, with Etihad decision-makers aiming to bring in a natural choice for the role after rotating between Josko Gvardiol and Nico O’Reilly throughout the 2024/25 season.

A successful acquisition of Rayan Ait-Nouri would likely allow both Gvardiol and O’Reilly to transition into new positions within Pep Guardiola’s team, with the former viewed as a reliable centre-back partner for Ruben Dias and the latter inherently being a central midfielder.

Speaking in early May about Josko Gvardiol’s ability to adapt, manager Pep Guardiola said, “He can play both [centre-back and left-back] perfectly, but in centre-back he’s doing less mistakes than before, much, much more solid and stable. Of course we can play there, definitely, keep proving him and doing that.”

In fact, speaking in mid-April, Pep Guardiola seemed to confirm Manchester City’s plan to invest in the left-back position during the summer market, citing the long-standing absence of a specialist in the role.

“Obviously,” was Guardiola’s response when asked whether the position would be one of the club’s priorities for the now-ongoing market. “Nico (O’Reilly) is helping, but he’s not a left-back. That’s true.”

“I played with Alex Zinchenko, Fabian Delph at left-back. We found solutions many, many years, with other qualities they help. Alex and Fabian for example, or sometimes Rico [Lewis], they help us massively.”
