With the season wrapped up, the players and management staff will be rightfully taking a break to refresh after yet another triumphant campaign.
But next season will be firmly in the plans of Brendan as he gears up for another demanding push to remain the dominant force at home while making continued progress on the European stage.
To achieve that he needs financial backing just like last year, but this time he requires more and in my view we need at least four top-tier signings brought into the squad if the club genuinely intends to support Brendan’s ambitious vision.
Granted last year that was facilitated due to the substantial sum earned for Matt O’Riley, but this year it would be ideal to strengthen without parting with any vital assets.
The likes of Gustaf Lagerbielke, Stephen Welsh, and Luis Palma will, like Scott Bain, be moved on and fringe players such as Kwon and Johnny Kenny will either be loaned out or sold outright. We also pocketed a significant amount thanks to Jeremie Frimpong’s switch from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool.
All the income from those departures can be allocated towards Brendan’s transfer budget as we have no justification not to. We possess considerable financial reserves so it’s essential that we provide Brendan the level of monetary backing he desires in the summer market.
For me we require a central defender, a creative playmaker, a dynamic winger and a clinical striker at the very least while retaining our core players. Do that and I’m fairly assured that we will continue to dominate domestically and also be more formidable in Europe. It’s exactly what we all hope to see happen.
And if we do support Brendan effectively this summer the board would be well within their rights to seek a commitment from the manager on a renewed contract, so that he can continue to develop these ‘assets’ further to fulfil the player trading model that Celtic utilises successfully.
The distinction is that we can do it at a more advanced level, converting £10m acquisitions into £50m sales and for that the club needs a manager like Brendan Rodgers who excels in player progression.
