NafisaLUKAS NMECHA has emerged as Leeds United manager Daniel Farke’s initial summer acquisition as the club gears up for its return to the Premier League.
Leeds United have revealed attacker Lukas Nmecha as their first addition of the transfer window, having fended off interest from Premier League competitors.
The 26-year-old will join the Whites on a free transfer on July 1, following the expiration of his Wolfsburg contract at the end of this month. The Germany international, who has seven senior caps for his country, has signed an initial two-year agreement.
“It’s just a great challenge and I’m really excited to get to know the team,” Nmecha explained.
“I’ve spoken with the manager many times and I’m excited to play that style of football that they played in the Championship, even in the Premier League.
“I saw that there was dominance last season in terms of possession and the goals. I’m an attacking player, so obviously that’s exciting for me.
“Of course, in the Premier League, there’s some big boys in there where you can’t play like that all the time, but I think the idea of the manager is to play good football, possession football, and that’s what I’m used to and what I love doing.
“I wish we could get going now, but we still have a few weeks of pre-pre-season, getting the runs in and all that! But, I just can’t wait to start training now.”
Nmecha is a graduate of Manchester City’s academy and made three first-team appearances – including his Premier League debut in 2018 – before transferring to Wolfsburg permanently in 2021, having initially been loaned to the German club in the 2019/20 season.
The forward – who experienced a series of loan stints at Preston North End, Middlesbrough and Anderlecht before departing Manchester City – scored 19 times in 73 outings for Wolfsburg, including three goals in 20 matches last season.
Nmecha won the Under-21s European Championships with Germany in 2021, after claiming the 2017 Under-19 Euros with England, having been eligible for both nations. The Hamburg-born talent has the ability to play as the leading striker or on the wing.
Additional attacking additions are expected to follow the signing of Nmecha, who stands at six-foot and offers an aerial advantage. Nmecha played five games in Wolfsburg’s 2021/22 Champions League campaign, in which he scored twice. He has scored 43 goals across all senior competitions in his career.
