Former Wolves goalkeeper Gary Pierce, who assisted the club in its first League Cup triumph, has passed away, the club has confirmed.

The player was best remembered for stepping in to replace Phil Parkes during the 1974 League Cup final, where Wolves defeated Manchester City 2-1.

Pierce signed with the club in 1973 and made 111 appearances for the Wolverhampton side.

A representative said a minute’s applause will be observed in Pierce’s honor prior to the Wolves match against Brentford on Sunday.

Pierce, who was born in Bury, began his senior career with Huddersfield Town.

His time at Wolves ended in 1979 when he transferred to Barnsley, before concluding his Football League career at Blackpool in 1984.
