NafisaSTEVEN GERRARD is reportedly preparing to withdraw from the race to become the next Rangers manager.
The Liverpool icon was among the leading candidates to take charge at Ibrox, alongside former Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti and ex-Southampton manager Russell Martin.
However, just hours after shareholder Dave King publicly endorsed him, calling him the “obvious choice”, it now appears he’s stepping away from the running.
King believed Gerrard had “unfinished business” at Ibrox following his successful title-winning campaign in 2021 before departing for Aston Villa later that year.
He told SunSport on Wednesday: ““From Steven’s point of view and where he is at the moment, I think he’d love nothing more than to come back and take on the challenge of restoring the club.
“It’s not just about one title. The project we hope we’re starting is to make Rangers the dominant No 1 team in Scotland.”
But as per the Daily Record, insiders suggest Gerrard and his family have decided to remain in the Middle East for at least another 12 months, citing it as a “lifestyle” decision.
The article states this choice is unrelated to a possible substantial tax liability Gerrard could face if he resumed work in the UK, following his stint in Saudi Arabia as Al-Ettifaq head coach, since he is now exempt.
That seemingly paves the way for the remaining contenders: former Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti, ex-Feyenoord coach Brian Priske, and former Southampton boss Russell Martin.
It is understood that Rangers is Ancelotti’s preferred destination, with updates anticipated soon, according to the BBC.
The 35-year-old has served as assistant to his legendary father Carlo at Madrid, Bayern Munich, Napoli, and Everton, but is now poised to take his first step as a head coach.
However, if the process becomes protracted, the Light Blues risk losing their chance to sign the Italian, as he has other offers to consider – one reportedly coming from a Serie A club, according to Italian sources.
Russell Martin is also expected to meet with club officials this week to present a new proposal for the manager’s position.
American healthcare mogul Andrew Cavenagh, who is playing a central role in the ongoing ownership transition, is also due in Europe this week to be closely involved in the final stages of the appointment.
