NafisaJeremie Frimpong has finalised his switch from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool on a “long-term contract”.
The right-sided defender moved to the German club from Celtic in 2021.
The Parkhead side included a clause in the agreement that entitled them to 30 per cent of any future profit made on Frimpong by Leverkusen.
With Leverkusen now transferring him to Liverpool for £33.7m, after originally signing him for £11.5m, Celtic will receive a timely boost of £6.7m ahead of the summer transfer period.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com about the transfer, the rapid full-back said: “It went quite easily. Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me, it was a no-brainer.
“For me, it was like, ‘Whatever you guys do, just get this done’, [speaking to] my agents: ‘Just get this done.’
“Liverpool fans, I’m going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate, and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, and get everything together.
“I’m just excited to be here. Thank you guys for accepting me, and I won’t let you guys down, and I’ll give you the energy that you guys want.”
Frimpong was brought to the east end of Glasgow from Manchester City’s youth system in 2019. He quickly made an impact under Neil Lennon and contributed to the club’s nine-in-a-row and quadruple treble achievements.
Now, following four and a half seasons at the BayArena, during which he claimed both a Bundesliga crown and DFB-Pokal, the Dutch international is heading to Anfield.
He arrives at Liverpool as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is set to join Real Madrid.
Arne Slot’s squad are the current Premier League title holders, with Frimpong joining to reinforce their championship defence ahead of the upcoming campaign. The 24-year-old will reunite with former Celtic defender and national teammate Virgil Van Dijk at Anfield.
