    And then there were two teams still battling for the 20th and final slot in next season’s Premier League — Sheffield United vs Sunderland in the “richest match in sports,” the Championship play-off final.

    Wembley Stadium will be awash in red and white stripes next Saturday, May 24 (10 am ET). Sheffield United couldn’t have had a smoother path through the semi-finals of the promotion play-offs as Chris Wilder’s men thrashed Bristol City 3-0 in both legs.

    Sunderland, meanwhile, required every last second of the 210 minutes of normal and extra time to overcome Frank Lampard and Haji Wright’s Coventry City.

    It was 2-1 in Sunderland’s favour after the first leg and Regis Le Bris’s outfit were just 15 minutes from progressing with a 0-0 stalemate at home, but the Sky Blues levelled in the 76th minute to force an additional half hour.

    With 121:52 on the clock, Enzo Le Fee delivered a corner into the box and Dan Ballard nodded it home with the final decisive touch of the game.

    Sheffield United are aiming to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt after finishing bottom and being relegated this time last year — their second demotion in four seasons. The Blades returned after two years the last time they dropped down.

    It’s been a longer road for Sunderland, who departed the Premier League in 2017 following a decade in the top tier and haven’t returned since.

    The Black Cats endured successive relegations (and bottom-place finishes) during that period and spent four years battling in League One. Now, after three seasons in the Championship, they are just one match away from a top-flight comeback.
