NafisaRangers’ hunt for a new manager appears to be nearing a conclusion following recent progress.
Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti is one contender for the position that became vacant when Barry Ferguson was dismissed from his interim responsibilities.
The Italian seemed poised to follow his father and Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti as he took over as Brazil’s head coach, which would have eliminated him from consideration at Ibrox.
However, there was a dramatic reversal and it is believed he now aims to launch his managerial journey this summer.
Ancelotti update revealed after Balague shares Rangers insight:
Guillem Balague reported (21 May) that the Gers shortlist had been reduced to two candidates, Ancelotti and former manager Steven Gerrard.
The Spanish powerhouse announced on 23 May that they have come to a mutual agreement with Carlo Ancelotti to part company at the close of the season.
It said: “Real Madrid CF and Carlo Ancelotti have reached an agreement to end his tenure as Real Madrid manager.
“Our club wishes to express its gratitude and affection to one of the greatest legends of Real Madrid and world football.”
That decision should clear the path for the 35-year-old to take charge in Govan, should he decide it aligns with his ambitions.
Rangers would be taking a gamble if they appoint Ancelotti:
Ancelotti junior has worked alongside his father at numerous clubs but lacks the hands-on experience typically expected to lead at Auchenhowie.
His hiring would represent a considerable gamble, even if he arrives with a compelling tactical approach and valuable connections that might benefit the Light Blues in the transfer market.
The former Madrid staffer could potentially attract players like David Alaba and Ferland Mendy if he is appointed, though there is no certainty of success.
Gerrard remains the more reliable option, having already led the Bears to an invincible campaign and the Scottish Premiership crown in the 2020-21 season.
His comeback could restore a sense of optimism, even if the Celtic squad assembled by Brendan Rodgers is significantly stronger than the ones the ex-Liverpool captain previously faced.
One thing remains certain, the 49ers must resolve the situation promptly, as there is too much squad planning required for the managerial decision to be delayed further.
