As widely circulated, Everton have now finalised the permanent signing of Argentine midfielder Carlos ‘Charly’ Alcaraz.

The 22-year-old had arrived at the Toffees from Flamengo in Brazil on loan during the January transfer period, with a provision to turn the move permanent for €15million (£12.6m, $16.9m).

Everton reportedly activated the clause earlier this week, swiftly reaching an agreement with the player — though on a surprisingly brief deal of just two years, with an option for a third.

The combative midfielder has quickly established a connection with the supporters and looks set to be a smart addition for the club, which faces the potential departure of over a dozen players as their contracts expire this summer.

Alcaraz featured in 16 matches for the Toffees, netting twice and registering three assists. Both of his goals came in the Premier League and were decisive winners, earning Everton four crucial points during their climb to 13th under David Moyes, having previously been stuck in the relegation zone during Sean Dyche’s tenure.

The relatively short duration does leave Everton vulnerable to a significant transfer exit next season if the player builds on his strong displays from this past campaign.

Considering Alcaraz has had brief spells at each of his previous clubs — Racing Club, Southampton, Juventus, and Flamengo — it seems Everton are being cautious about committing to a long-term arrangement.

Nonetheless, securing a player of his calibre for a modest fee in today’s inflated market appears to be a prudent decision, especially with numerous other changes anticipated this summer.
