NafisaSheffield United manager Chris Wilder has brushed aside renewed speculation linking Leeds United with one of the Blades’ standout players following the club’s play-off final setback.
Leeds had made an attempt to sign Blades ace Gus Hamer last summer, but the proposal was rejected, and the attacking midfielder went on to be crowned the EFL Championship’s player of the season.
Hamer continued to impress, seemingly steering the Blades toward a Premier League comeback, as his assist for Tyrese Campbell gave United a 1-0 lead in Saturday’s play-off showdown against Sunderland.
However, Sunderland responded and eventually clinched a 2-1 win — securing promotion for the Black Cats and raising uncertainty around the futures of Sheffield United’s key talents, including Hamer, who has been linked to Leeds.
Speaking during his post-match press briefing, Wilder was specifically questioned about how the result might affect United’s ability to retain their top performers at Bramall Lane.
Wilder, however, insisted that he hadn’t given much thought to any transfer ramifications in the immediate aftermath of the defeat — and that the club would now have to handle whatever comes next.
As quoted by the YEP’s sister outlet The Star, Wilder responded: “How everything pans out, everything will take care of itself.
“But as you can imagine, I’ve not thought about futures – personally, or from a player point of view – being an hour and a half after an incredibly low point of everybody’s careers, really.
“The players will be incredibly hurting, the supporters will be, the coaching staff will be. But it is what it is, and we’re going to have to deal with it.”
