Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has taken on a new position after spending five months away from football.

Gerrard departed Saudi Pro League outfit Al Ettifaq by mutual agreement in January following an 18-month stint at the helm.

He has been linked with a potential return to Rangers after the dismissal of Philippe Clement, with former Gers midfielder Barry Ferguson currently serving in a temporary capacity.

Ferguson is not expected to remain in the role past the season’s conclusion, with Gerrard, Davide Ancelotti, and former Feyenoord boss Brian Priske all said to be in the running for the job.

In the interim, Gerrard has agreed to join TNT Sports’ coverage of Saturday’s Champions League final between PSG and Inter Milan.

The ex-midfielder famously captained Liverpool to victory in the 2005 Champions League final held in Istanbul.

He will join a punditry panel featuring Owen Hargreaves, Rio Ferdinand, and Karen Carney, while James Horncastle and Julien Laurens will deliver in-depth analysis of the two European teams competing.

Ferdinand will be making his final appearance for TNT Sports after revealing on Wednesday that he is stepping away from the network.

The Manchester United great has been part of the TNT team since retiring from football in 2015 and confirmed he will now concentrate on other ventures.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Ferdinand said: “After 10 incredible years, I have made the difficult decision to step away from TNT Sports after the Champions League final.

“We have a brilliant end to the season to look forward to on Saturday and for now all focus will be on what I think could go down as one of the great European finals.

“As I turn the page to the next chapter, I carry with me countless memories.

“I am excited about what the future holds, spending more time with my family, focusing on Rio Ferdinand Presents & my other business interests. I hope to stay connected with all of you in different capacities.

“Thank you once again for everything.”
