NafisaNottingham Forest wrap up their season this afternoon with a thrilling final-day clash against Chelsea.
The Reds host the Blues at the City Ground (4pm kick-off) with Champions League spots still up for grabs. It’s all to play for as the battle for a top-five Premier League finish goes right to the wire.
Regardless of the outcome, it has been a fantastic season for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men. But whichever European competition they end up in next season, changes are expected within the squad during the summer.
The transfer window will bring arrivals and departures along the Trent. For some players, today’s fixture could be their final appearance for the club. Below, NottinghamshireLive takes a look at who might be saying goodbye when the final whistle sounds on the 2024/25 campaign.
Alex Moreno
It’s possible that the Aston Villa loanee has already made his last outing in the Garibaldi. It would hardly be a shock if he is not named in the squad today.
The defender hasn’t featured in the matchday group for the last four Premier League fixtures. His most recent appearance came in the 1-0 loss to Everton last month.
Forest have the option to sign him permanently, but indications aren’t especially positive. He’s been linked with a return to former side Real Betis.
Harry Toffolo
With his contract expiring at the end of the campaign, there’s been no sign yet that the left-back will be offered an extension. As things stand, he’s expected to move on as a free agent this summer.
If today turns out to be his final Forest outing, he’ll depart having cemented cult status at the City Ground. A consummate professional and a class act, he etched his name into club history with a dramatic goal-line clearance against Tottenham Hotspur recently.
Willy Boly
Forest have an option to keep the centre-back for another year, so a call on his future is expected shortly. He was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia not too long ago, so it’s unclear whether he’ll remain at the club next term.
Nuno appreciates the experienced defender’s leadership and presence in the dressing room. However, he wasn’t included in the squad for last week’s 2-1 victory over West Ham, so it’s uncertain if he’ll feature today.
Wayne Hennessey
The Welsh shot-stopper is nearing the end of the short-term contract he penned in January. It seems unlikely he’ll be handed a renewal, even though he’s been a respected part of the goalkeeping group at Forest as the third-choice option.
Hennessey was offered a coaching position with Wales’ Under-21s earlier this year. There’s been no confirmation if he plans to accept. Should he remain at the club, it would likely be in a similar mentoring capacity.
Morgan Gibbs-White
Forest supporters will be hopeful there are many more games in the Garibaldi ahead for the England international. Yet, his future is under scrutiny with the summer transfer window approaching, especially amid interest from Manchester City.
The 25-year-old has plenty of other suitors, but Pep Guardiola’s side are especially eager as they look to fill the void left by Kevin De Bruyne. Guardiola’s approach to Gibbs-White following City’s FA Cup semi-final win over Forest last month only intensified the rumours.
Forest remain in control and have no intention of parting with their star player, but their determination to keep him could be seriously tested. Fans will no doubt be hoping he remains part of the journey.
