NafisaCeltic have reportedly told third-choice goalkeeper Scott Bain that he is free to depart the club, bringing an end to his six-year stint in Glasgow. [TCW]
The 33-year-old, who arrived at Celtic from Dundee in 2018, still had a year remaining on his deal, but the club have decided to terminate the agreement early by mutual consent. Bain will now be available to leave on a free transfer in search of regular game time elsewhere.
Having featured 78 times in all competitions for the Hoops, once regarded as a solid back-up, Bain gradually slipped down the hierarchy following the arrivals of Joe Hart and, more recently, Kasper Schmeichel. With Viljami Sinisalo now also above him in the pecking order, chances at senior level have been practically non-existent.
His exit marks the close of a chapter for a player who was part of title-winning squads and domestic cup campaigns, though he seldom held the number one shirt for prolonged spells.
The goalkeeping unit has evolved in recent seasons, with Schmeichel now clearly Rodgers’ first-choice and Sinisalo offering more than just decent cover — some would argue he’s matching Schmeichel’s performances.
Celtic are already lining up Bain’s successor. The Hoops are expected to bring in former Aberdeen shot-stopper Ross Doohan on a free deal. Doohan, a product of Celtic’s youth system, is viewed as a reliable and budget-friendly reinforcement.
Although Bain’s departure was anticipated due to his reduced involvement, it paves the way for a renewed look in the goalkeeping department for the 2025/26 season. His conduct during his Celtic tenure has never been doubted, and he departs with the club’s best regards.
