Ange Postecoglu issues response on coming back to Celtic as Manager to help Hoops end European Trophy droughts after Europa League win for Tottenham amid EXIT talks

Postecoglou looked emotional as the celebrations got underway, having secured Tottenham’s first major trophy in 17 years. Before the match, there was plenty of speculation that he could walk away regardless of whether Spurs won or lost.

Whispers even emerged over a potential return to Celtic, where he previously enjoyed immense success — a move that would certainly stir emotions on both sides of the border.

However, the 59-year-old suggested that he still had unfinished business in north London when quizzed on his future after collecting his winners’ medal.

“I’ve had such a laser focus on winning this thing that I didn’t even [think about it],” said Postecoglou on TNT Sports. “We’re still building this team. It’s still a very young team and we need to add some experience to it.

“We’re in the Champions League next season. My thought process and what I’ve been doing is trying to build a team that can be successful for four, five, six years.

“I’m the manager of the football club. That decision is not in my hands. It doesn’t affect me, though. If it was going to affect me, you would have seen it in the build-up to here.

“All I cared about is this thing, this medal around my neck. If I did [have it], it would have meant that this football club has won a trophy.”

When asked directly if he planned to walk away, Postecoglou answered: “I don’t feel like I’ve completed the job yet. We’re still building.

“The moment I accepted the role, I had one thing in my head and that was to win something. We’ve done that now, so I want to build on it.”

Postecoglou was also asked about his vow to secure a trophy in his second term at Tottenham, a statement that drew ridicule at the time.

“People misinterpreted me,” he said. “It was not me boasting, just me making a declaration and I believed it. I had this thing inside me more than anything else.

“I know our league form has been unacceptable, but coming third was not going to change this football club. Winning a trophy would. That was my ambition and I was prepared to wear it if it did not happen.”
