NafisaKris Boyd didn’t conceal his frustration as Celtic officially claimed their fourth straight Scottish Premiership title, but the former Rangers striker was swift to recognize the magnitude of the accomplishment — and the widening divide between Glasgow’s two powerhouses.
Throughout the initial months of the season, Celtic were relentless, and there was even early speculation of another unbeaten campaign under Rodgers, but the Hoops eased off slightly after the new year, with the lead over Rangers already substantial.
Yet, despite their impressive momentum waning, Rangers couldn’t come close to challenging Celtic.
Speaking after Brendan Rodgers’ team secured the title in commanding style, Boyd acknowledged Celtic’s reliability and dominance throughout the season.
“First of all, congratulations to Celtic.
“I mean, I think once again, they’ve been the outstanding team in Scotland.
“You know, that consistency that Brendan Rodgers seems to find from his team is unmatched.
“And, you know, I think for a Rangers point of view, there’s obviously going to be a takeover happening anytime soon.
“But the harsh reality is that Rangers are falling further and further behind Celtic.
“When you go back a few years ago in terms of that trophy count and, you know, everybody’s, it was virtually impossible to think that if I go back to my time at the football club, that Celtic were going to get anywhere near it.
“And people will say since Rangers have went down the league, but Celtic have actually won more trophies since Rangers have came back to the top flight than they did when they were away.”
It was a candid evaluation from a man who spent years striving to avert moments like these.
Sutton was correct when the pair sparred last year, and Sky Sports cleverly unearthed the old footage after Rodgers’ team clinched 55 at Tannadice and surged two trophies ahead of Rangers in the overall tally.
They have an opportunity to expand that collection, with Celtic’s third most accomplished manager, when they face Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final in pursuit of yet another treble.
