Rangers Triumph in Old Firm Clash, but Diomande’s Celebration Sparks Controversy

Rangers supporters had every reason to celebrate as their team secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Celtic in the Old Firm clash on Sunday.

First-half goals from Nico Raskin and Mo Diomande gave Rangers a strong lead heading into the break, though Daizen Maeda quickly pulled one back for Celtic early in the second half.

As Celtic pushed for a late equalizer, it was Hamza Igamane who delivered a memorable moment for the traveling fans, securing a vital goal that sealed the win.

Rangers players and supporters rejoiced together at full-time, marking the return of visiting fans to the fixture. However, one player’s goal celebration could now land the club in trouble.

Diomande’s Celebration Sparks Controversy

Diomande’s reaction to his goal at Celtic Park saw him cover his face while pointing his fingers towards the Celtic supporters in a gesture resembling a gun symbol.

Rangers have been penalized for similar incidents in the past, notably in 2020 when Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent performed comparable celebrations. That incident resulted in a £10,000 fine, though the club firmly denied any wrongdoing, expressing their shock at the charges.

This time, Rangers could be facing an even steeper financial penalty. Former FIFA official Keith Hackett has even suggested that repeated incidents like this could lead to discussions about a points deduction if the issue persists.

Hackett shared his thoughts with Ibrox News, stating:

“It is difficult for a club to control its players when they are filled with emotion having scored a goal.

“However, this will be looked upon very seriously and the fines will no doubt increase. The Scottish FA will no doubt be discussing the size of the fine in order to stop this inappropriate celebration.

“I suggest the Scottish FA pay the club a visit and address the management and the players. There is the potential of points deductions, which may now be in their thoughts.”

Rangers Enjoy Old Firm Success

If the club only faces a fine, Rangers fans will likely see it as a small price to pay for such an important victory.

Every player stepped up to the occasion, giving the traveling supporters—and those watching from afar—plenty to cheer about.

Old Firm clashes are rarely without controversy, but hopefully, this issue is swiftly resolved with just a financial penalty rather than any harsher consequences.
