NafisaCyriel Dessers remains a polarizing figure among Rangers fans, despite boasting an impressive goal tally this season.
The Nigerian striker may not have found the net in his last two games, but his total of 22 goals for the campaign speaks for itself. His standout performance in Rangers’ 3-1 Europa League victory over Fenerbahce was arguably his most complete display since joining the club.
However, many still question whether the 30-year-old is clinical enough to consistently lead the line, pointing to his tendency to squander key chances.
Derek Ferguson Weighs in on Dessers’ Future
Dessers has frequently been linked with a move away from Ibrox, with Turkish giants reportedly keeping an eye on him following his impressive showing against Fenerbahce.
Former Rangers midfielder turned pundit Derek Ferguson—brother of current caretaker manager Barry—believes Dessers will have plenty of suitors this summer. He remains puzzled by the striker’s inconsistency, especially given his recent European performances.
“In the game against Fenerbahce, he was everything you want from a centre-forward,” Ferguson exclusively told Ibrox News. “He was physical, running the channels, holding the ball up, a threat in front of goal.
“I just can’t believe how he performs at such a high level, and then another day he looks out of sorts. If I’d never seen Dessers until last week, I’d have been thinking, what a top, top player.
“I don’t get him, I’ll be honest. But what comes across from his interviews is that he’s a lovely guy and he says he wants to stay at Rangers. I’m not so sure they’ll be able to keep hold of him at this rate.
“A lot of top clubs across Europe will be looking at his record, which is fantastic. It’s easy to scrutinise his all-round play, but in recent weeks he’s been top drawer.”
Dessers’ Goalscoring Record at Rangers
Strikers at Rangers are primarily judged on their contributions in the Scottish Premiership, where Dessers has netted 11 times in 27 appearances. While that may not appear outstanding at first glance, it’s important to note that 10 of those games came from the bench.
Additionally, he is not the club’s designated penalty taker, a factor that could have boosted his tally further.
Still, with 22 goals across all competitions and two months left in the season, Dessers has made a significant impact. His four assists in both the Europa League and Scottish Premiership further underline his contribution.
While he may never fully convince every Rangers supporter, his performances are certainly silencing some of his critics.
