Ianis Hagi’s Rollercoaster Season at Rangers Continues Amid Transfer Uncertainty

Rangers midfielder Ianis Hagi has experienced one of the most turbulent seasons of his career.

Entering the final two years of his contract last summer, Hagi was informed by Philippe Clement that he had no future at Ibrox—a decision that now seems ironic in hindsight.

As a result, he was frozen out of the first-team squad and relegated to playing with Rangers B throughout July and August. The situation stemmed from a contractual clause stating that if Hagi featured in another competitive match for the club, he would be entitled to a wage increase.

Despite failing to secure a move before the summer transfer window closed, the deadlock was eventually resolved in October. Since his return to the first-team setup, Hagi has become a vital contributor, registering 10 goal involvements in 18 Premiership appearances this season.

Last summer, Hagi was adamant about staying at Rangers despite the contractual complications, and it seems his stance remains unchanged.

Gheorghe Popescu Believes Hagi Wants to Stay at Rangers

Former Barcelona captain Gheorghe Popescu, a close friend and ex-teammate of Hagi’s father, Gheorghe, has weighed in on the midfielder’s future. Speaking to sportpesure, Popescu expressed doubts that Hagi is considering an exit from Glasgow.

Last summer, the playmaker was linked with a move to Fenerbahce under Jose Mourinho, while Galatasaray was also credited with interest. However, the credibility of these links remains uncertain.

Even Popescu is unsure whether the reported interest from both clubs still exists. What he does believe, though, is that Hagi’s departure from Rangers this summer is unlikely given that he still has a year left on his contract.

Popescu stated: “I don’t know if it’s true or not (no interest from Fenerbahce). What I can say is that I know from Ianis that he is happy at Rangers, he has started playing and is appreciated.

“I don’t know about his intention to leave there, whether it’s Fenerbahce, Galatasaray or any other club.

*“I don’t know that Ianis would want to leave Glasgow. It would be something that would be hard to imagine (him joining Fenerbahce).

*“Gică (his father) is considered the best foreigner to have played in the Turkish championship and I know how much he loves Galatasaray.

“It would be a strange thing, but they are two entities and are different. Gică is Gică and Ianis is Ianis, each with his own career. I repeat, I do not know of Fenerbahce’s interest in Ianis Hagi.”

Rangers Set for Europa League Clash Against Fenerbahce

Could Hagi be facing his potential future club on Thursday night? Rangers are set to travel to Turkey for their Europa League clash against Fenerbahce in what will be Barry Ferguson’s first European match in charge.

The former captain has stepped in following the sacking of Philippe Clement, whose position became untenable after back-to-back defeats to Queen’s Park and St Mirren. While Rangers’ progress to the last 16 of the Europa League initially kept him in charge, those domestic losses proved too costly.

Hagi was originally left out of Rangers’ Europa League squad at the start of the season but was reinstated for the knockout rounds after UEFA permitted three squad changes.
